By Kaya Gordon

Ultraviolet rays beaming down in unrelenting heat,

Sweat dripping down the nape of your neck,

The jeans covering your legs

Feel much too constricting.

Your chest feels tight

Making your breath more labored.

Sweat now dripping down your brow and cheeks,

Your cheeks flushing under the angry sun.

Harsh hooves stomp the grass around you

Into a mess of lifeless sun-scorched earth,

Your body begins to ache

Yet still you persist.

You pour

A large bag of grain

Into the metal bucket attached to the fence,

And watch as the kids come running.

Kaya’s Bio:

My name is Kaya and I’m an undergrad transfer student currently studying biology. I’ve always had a love for writing and enjoy expressing myself through my work. I tend to write short stories more than anything else, so my poem “Arivaca” was the first poetry piece I have written in a very long time.

Kaya wrote this poem for her Intro to Creative Writing course taught by Susan Miller, who selected the piece as a WHR featured poem.
