Japanese Studies at the Asian Languages and Cultures Department

The Japanese Program at the Asian Languages and Cultures Department offers a wide range of courses in literature, history, visual culture, language and linguistics to introduce students to the cultural heritage of Japan. Students will learn to communicate effectively (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in Japanese and acquire the critical skills in analyzing and interpreting literary and cultural materials in the student’s area of specialization. Students will also be able to relate relevant issues to other areas in the humanities. See COURSES for courses offered this semester.

We also host a number of workshops and lectures by guest speakers from all over the world on diverse topics related to Japan. See EVENTS.

Students are strongly encouraged to explore various opportunities for studying in Japan. We have a number of universities with which we have established exchange programs: the University of Fukui (Fukui), International Christian University (Tokyo), Tsuru Bunka University (Chiba), and Ritsumeikan (Kyoto). For further information see STUDY ABROAD.
