Offered here for the first time are the complete full-text versions of the Lay Supplements<\/em>\u00a0series, prepared by the\u00a0Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Based on the information found in\u00a0Lay Supplement No. 1<\/em>, the original plan for the\u00a0Lay Supplements\u00a0<\/em>series was to publish standalone pamphlets of 10-25 pages on 14 distinct topics in 1941, with \u201ca suitable reading list of reliable works for those who are interested in studying the subject beyond the scope of the Supplements\u201d (Jellinek, 1941, p. 2). There is no author attribution on the title page, however, the first 12 of the series, published during the years 1941-1944, were attributed to E. M. Jellinek by the CAAAL bibliographers in the first published bibliography of E. M. Jellinek from 1966.<\/p>\n

The first twelve titles of the series were printed a total of 101 times, with\u00a0Lay Supplement 10<\/em>,\u00a0The drinker and the drunkard,\u00a0<\/em>as the most popular with its 12 editions. The last two\u00a0Lay Supplements<\/em>\u00a0were published in 1955, after Jellinek had left Yale, authored by Mark Keller and republished in other formats.<\/p>\n

Additional copies of the titles in this series contained only minor updates to the \u201cselected reading\u201d lists on the back covers. The\u00a0Lay Supplements\u00a0<\/em>were bound as a single volume, similar to the\u00a0Classics of the Alcohol Literature<\/em><\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0and were even assigned a Library of Congress call number (RC565.Q3), as shown on the title’s spine (see picture on the right).<\/p>\n
