I wouldn\u2019t say it was a surprise but the breadth and depth of the Alcohol Archives never failed to mesmerize me. It\u2019s fascinating to read, let alone hold in my hands, documents that started it all: the first <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/publications\/qjsa\/\">journal<\/a>, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/summer-school\/\">education and training program<\/a>, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/the-yale-plan-posters-on-alcoholism\/\">clinic<\/a> related to alcohol studies, and for the librarian, the first attempt to collect, index, catalog, and share alcohol literature in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/publications\/classified-abstract-archive-of-the-alcohol-literature\/\">Classified Abstract Archive of the Alcohol Literature (CAAAL)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Where should I start? Unlike at any running event, there\u2019s no clear start line! I already know that there\u2019s no finish line, but no start line either? How about water stops for an alcohol history project (pun intended)?<\/p>\n<p>Sticking with the running metaphor, I decided to consider the Digital Alcohol Archives project as the never-ending career of an athlete, young or master\u2019s age, and just do it as one does one session after the other: lots of slow, everyday practice run, the bread and butter of training, peppered with steady tempo runs and a few speed sessions, when the time feels right. Adding mileage with weekly long runs is also a proven strategy to keep motivated with or without a race on the horizon.<\/p>\n<h4>Toeing the Start Line<\/h4>\n<p>The first thing I did was taking inventory of the work completed so far as well as to be done in the next six months, which left me with an unorganized but manageable list of resources and tasks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2056\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8-300x232.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8-300x232.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8-1024x793.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8-768x595.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8-1536x1190.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/01\/6F08B683-4C4F-4872-A1FF-6D35F08369E8.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>items scanned:<\/strong> about 2,000 pdfs and images, about 25 audiovisual materials<\/li>\n<li><strong>condition of items:<\/strong> quality varies, decent pdfs, good jpgs (yet to be converted to tiff), audiovisual items have been digitized<\/li>\n<li><strong>platforms available and ready to go:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu\/search\/results\/?key=root&amp;q1=Rutgers+Center+of+Alcohol+Studies&amp;q1field=mods%3Aname\">RUcore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.libraries.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies\/\">Omeka<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/test-rul-d9-alcoholstudies2.pantheonsite.io\/\">Drupal<\/a> (in development mode), <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/\">WordPress<\/a>\u00a0(this site) all set up, tested, and have samples uploaded (click on the link to see them grow over time)<\/li>\n<li><strong>expertise available:<\/strong> myself (knows the collection inside out), one grad assistant (7-8 hours per week), three trusted former CAS Library staff members (with complementary skills, but on a volunteer basis), a digital curator and a metadata librarian to consult (as needed)<\/li>\n<li><strong>time dedicated:<\/strong> six months of my undivided attention during a sabbatical leave (virtually unheard of, in my experience), aiming for larger percentage of my workload after that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Listing these already makes me feel cautiously optimistic: the bread-and-butter jobs seem to be covered. I need only to break them down to weeks and days within the months, keeping in mind week 4, which is supposed to be a step-back week according to the proven rules of periodization.<\/p>\n<p>I was thinking to establish a more structured way to look back (and forward) as I\u2019ll continue my journaling in public. Including some feel-good headlines, here\u2019s what I first have in mind to review my work and progress periodically. I may add more or drop a few, depending on my reflections and the necessity to document this project.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Accomplishments<\/h4>\n<p><div>Not much, in terms of the &#8220;deliverable.&#8221; Getting up to speed took me longer than I expected. I managed to dig up documentation of past projects (2008-2021) and review them, along with the existing sites. I feel comfortable in my role now enough to start catching up with project contributors and participants.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h4>New discoveries<\/h4>\n<p><div>The detailed documentation was definitely my biggest surprise (and how much of it I forgot). The illustrated Short Research Leave Report at the end of 2021 after dedicating 22 days (one day a week) as well as the Sabbatical Proposal I wrote soon after helped tremendously.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h4>Concerns<\/h4>\n<p><div>Reviewing triggers reflections, which always come with concerns, old and new. The amount of work is undoubtedly overwhelming. For all my confidence in my abilities and the viability of this project (to a point where I can publicize it), I will need help in certain areas: expertise, access, best practices, and hours to put in in order to upload all those files in the right format to RUcore, the main repository of this collection.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>To do<\/h4>\n<p><div>Set up meetings with all interested parties asap:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>digital curator to discuss strategies, timeline, workflow, and best practices<\/li>\n<li>metadata librarian and grad assistant for official Workflow Management Systems training,<\/li>\n<li>IIS programmer team to make sure all Drupal elements are in place (Open Source software, locally customized)<\/li>\n<li>staff at Annex for access to physical files, including research and scanning,<\/li>\n<li>former CAS staff to pick their brains and work out details of engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Takeaway: First things first<\/h4>\n<p><div>Even if it\u2019s an ongoing project, getting up the speed after a hiatus of any length needs time.
