It was closed in December 2016.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Including this blog roll, the site preserves a great deal of valuable content from the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.archive.org%2Fweb%2F20160517160353%2Fhttp%3A%2Flibrary.alcoholstudies.rutgers.edu%2Farchives%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cdina.fley%40rutgers.edu%7C6e0638082cc14d2815ea08d71f373f22%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C637012194449276142&amp;sdata=cuVJygafR1UVHD3ZjDZsIvtnTI2UStrZ1W7WpsRn9Fg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">CAS Archives Pages on CAS Information Services<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0and the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu\/search\/results\/?q1=Center+of+Alcohol+studies&amp;q1field=object&amp;q1bool=AND&amp;q2=Center+of+Alcohol+Studies+Information+Services+Newsletter&amp;q2field=mods%3AtitleInfo&amp;rtype%5B%5D=text&amp;ppage=10&amp;key=root&amp;orderby=datedesc&amp;numresults=50\">CAS Information Services Newsletter<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1814\">Launched in May 2023 and listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\">Rutgers Digital Collections portal<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\">Digital Alcohol Studies Archives Collection <\/a>features its own landing page on the RUL website, developed on the Drupal platform, virtually all the content from this site, and more, except the blog posts.<\/figure>\n<p>As I explained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/month-six-the-show-must-go-on\/\">post concluding my Spring 2023 sabbatical<\/a> semester, the new site presents the history of CAS and the archival collection under headlines similar to this WordPress pilot. A great addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.libraries.rutgers.edu\/digital-collection\">Digital Collections search porta<\/a>l, allows searching and browsing the <a href=\"https:\/\/rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu\/search\/results\/?key=root&amp;q1=Center+of+Alcohol+Studies+Library&amp;q1field=mods%3Aname&amp;q1bool=OR&amp;q2=Temperance&amp;q2field=mods%3Asubject&amp;rtype%5B%5D=&amp;orderby=dateasc&amp;numresults=50&amp;c%5B0%5D=\">1,000+ documents in RUcore<\/a> by document types and collections. There are multiple options to narrow down searches to full text, full records, or any of its parts, subject, and more. Stay tuned for a tutorial on how to benefit from this function.<\/p>\n<p>Using its functionality to highlight items in exhibits, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies-archives.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\">Omeka digital collections<\/a> platform focuses on images to showcase representative content for forthcoming events and celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>So, should I keep this site or not? Let\u2019s see the pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p>PRO: Let\u2019s keep it!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pro 1 It\u2019s done, no need to develop any further.<\/li>\n<li>Pro 2 It\u2019s well organized and mirrors the Drupal site<\/li>\n<li>Pro 3 As such, it may help users discover items in the Digital Collection<\/li>\n<li>Pro 4 The blog roll saves content from the CAS Newsletter and follows how the Digital Alcohol, Studies Archives Collection evolved, also documenting processes, decisions, and more<\/li>\n<li>Pro 5 The Drupal site doesn\u2019t have a blog component<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CON: Delete this site!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Con 1 No need to duplicate content. With the Drupal site and links from the CAS homepage to that, this site seems to be redundant.<\/li>\n<li>Con 2 It will be difficult to maintain both sites equally, in terms of quality, in the long run.<\/li>\n<li>Con 3 Broken links, software updates, migration &#8211; all easier to do in Drupal.<\/li>\n<li>Con 4 This site is owned by a singular person, Drupal is maintained by RUL IIS.<\/li>\n<li>Con 5 This site may not have a lot of views anyway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>VERDICT: <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Time will tell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to make a decision just yet. I sorely remember a rather hasty decision (not mine, obviously) to ditch the entire CAS Library tab at the end of 2016 for the website migration after the Library was shut down. I also remember scrambling to run a rescue operation to preserve the unique content, a lot of which, by the way, was created and updated by the CAS Library staff not even a year prior to that.<\/p>\n<p>I also remember how the new CAS leadership, missing this content, decided to add back the library to the site &#8211; but the only link I was able to provide in 2018 was the archived pages on the Internet Archive. Now the Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies website proudly <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.rutgers.edu\/cas-library\/\">features a CAS Library page<\/a>, with links to the RUL Drupal page and its various components.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or is it?
