The <\/span>Digital Alcohol Studies Archives<\/span><\/a> is a<\/span>n open-access<\/span> collection of<\/span> searchable full texts and images <\/span>selected from <\/span>documents <\/span>amassed, preserved, and digitized over eighty years at Yale and Rutgers<\/span>, now <\/span>freely<\/span> available <\/span>for <\/span>the public<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance<\/span> of the Digital Alcohol Studies<\/span> A<\/span>rchives<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Rutgers Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies (CAS) has been both a vital part of the history of the alcohol research field and a crucial institutional repository for the preservation and dissemination of that history. Given the role CAS played in shaping the fiel<\/span>d, the Digital Alcohol Studies Archives Collection is<\/span> t<\/span>he<\/span> only one of its kind<\/span>.<\/span> It <\/span>aims to preserve a crucial phase in the history of science: the birth and evolution of modern-day alcohol studies<\/span> through the lens of one of its central institutions, from the founding of the Section on Alcohol Studies at Yale through its expansion into the Center of Alcohol Studies, its move to Rutgers in 1962, and up to the present day<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Digital Alcohol Studies archive preserves the trailblazing history of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies for the next generation of scholars and practitioners. <\/span>Selected from the <\/span>print collection, <\/span>digital artifacts<\/span>,<\/span> and remnants of the defunct <\/span>CAS <\/span>Library and Archives,<\/span> the <\/span>collection is designed to foster reflections on past experiences and promote life-long learning by <\/span>provi<\/span>ding<\/span> context for current trends and <\/span>help<\/span>ing<\/span> translate past practices to current issues in addiction research, education, and treatment. <\/span>It promises to be of value to historians, students, educators, information scientists, and researchers<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sc<\/span>ope and structure <\/span>of the Digital Alcohol Studies<\/span> A<\/span>rchives<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Digital Alcohol Studies Archives Collection <\/span>is divided into<\/span> five sections: publications, notable people, special collections, Summer School, and images. The Publications Collection includes gray literature, pamphlets, fact sheets, lay supplements, and material related to publishing alcohol literature, scholarly and lay alike<\/span>, published by the Center at Yale and Rutgers<\/span>, including <\/span>texts<\/span> of historical <\/span>relevance and seminal <\/span>articles<\/span> in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n

A treasure trove for historians, t<\/span>he Notable People Collection shares draft manuscripts of publications and conference presentations, correspondence, notes, and ephemera related to the founders of alcohol studies, such as Selden D. Bacon, John Anthony Carpenter, Leon G. Greenberg, Howard W. Haggard, Yandell Henderson, E. M. Jellinek, Mark Keller, and Raymond G. McCarthy. <\/span><\/p>\n

With searchable program brochures, alumni newsletters, and images, the Summer School Collection documents how the Summer School of Alcohol Studies evolved at Yale and continued at Rutgers. <\/span>The d<\/span>ocument<\/span>s not only<\/span> provide a historical perspective<\/span> of education and training in the field <\/span>but also help <\/span>shed light on <\/span>the <\/span>reason why p<\/span>articipants often returned several times for refresher and advanced courses<\/span>: <\/span>a sense of belonging to this diverse community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Special Collections and Images sections share rare documents and images from the <\/span>Center\u2019s <\/span>substantial print archives, including documentation and finding aids of the Classified Abstract <\/span>Archive of the Alcohol Literature (CAAAL), the McCarthy Collection, and the Temperance Collection.<\/span> M<\/span>any of the<\/span> unique<\/span> images, <\/span>including photographs, illustrations, <\/span>and <\/span>sketches<\/span>,<\/span> that had been requested <\/span>as illustrations in books and in exhibitions<\/span> in the past, are now available to be downloaded from the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Techn<\/span>ology for best access<\/span><\/h4>\n

The overarching <\/span>goal<\/span> of the<\/span> Digital Alcohol Studies Archives<\/span> i<\/span>s to provide access to materials <\/span>previously <\/span>unavailable <\/span>to<\/span> the public and raise awareness <\/span>of<\/span> this availability via multiple access points. <\/span>T<\/span>echnical resources include the <\/span>Omeka digital collections<\/span><\/a> platform<\/span>,<\/span> focus<\/span>i<\/span>ng on<\/span> images and<\/span> benefiting from <\/span>its<\/span> exhibit function<\/span> to showcase representative <\/span>or fun <\/span>content<\/span>, such as the <\/span>Summer School of Alcohol Studies collectible t-shirts<\/span><\/a>, available only in this collection.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>RUcore<\/span><\/a> d<\/span>igital platform is used for complex resources such as PDF-borne pamphlets and documents in order to support <\/span>full-text <\/span>searching. Each bibliographic record includes <\/span>subject headings,<\/span> description<\/span>s,<\/span> and a persistent URL with a DOI. <\/span>The record of each archival-quality image features a <\/span>more <\/span>detailed description providing information and guidance to related items.<\/span> The collection is designed to inspire<\/span> and <\/span>prompt reflection<\/span>, <\/span>point<\/span>ing<\/span> researchers <\/span>to further resources <\/span>while<\/span> help<\/span>ing<\/span> them <\/span>understand the historical and institutional context from which the field emerged. <\/span><\/p>\n

With its <\/span>1,000+ items<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> th<\/span>e Digital Alcohol Studies Archives also provide a glimpse into the scope of the sizeable <\/span>print <\/span>CAS Special Collections, currently stored off-site.<\/span> One \u201citem\u201d <\/span>in the digital collection <\/span>can be a single image, with a detailed description, or a 100-page document collated from several related texts, all indexed, OCR-ed, and full-text searchable.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>n appealing <\/span>and <\/span>valuable<\/span> addition, t<\/span>he homepage of the <\/span>Digital Alcohol Studies Archives remarkably<\/span> improve<\/span>s<\/span> the <\/span>discoverability and <\/span>accessibility of <\/span>CAS <\/span>documents, objects, and artifacts relating to the founding of alcohol studies as an academic disciplin<\/span>e with its user-friendly navigation and sustainable design.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story behind<\/span> the Digital Alcohol Studies<\/span> A<\/span>rchives<\/span><\/h4>\n

With an increased focus on online resources during the pandemic, a <\/span>small<\/span> team, consisting of <\/span>Judit H. Ward, alcohol studies librarian<\/span> and former director of the Information Services Division at CAS (2007-2016),<\/span> Nicholas Allred, <\/span>professor of English literature with a research interest in alcohol history,<\/span> and<\/span> Isaiah Beard, digital data curator<\/span> at RUL<\/span>, <\/span>piloted<\/span> methods <\/span>and developed digital<\/span> content <\/span>while <\/span>exploring<\/span> opportunities provided by currently available platforms<\/span>, such as WordPress and Omeka<\/span>.<\/span> Strongly supported by CAS, the <\/span>Digital Alcohol Studies Archives<\/span> hit the ground running<\/span> and <\/span>soon <\/span>became one of the priority projects of New Brunswick Libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n

M<\/span>etadata librarian Geoff Wood <\/span>assisted in e<\/span>xperiment<\/span>ing<\/span> with <\/span>RUcore<\/span>, the Rutgers University Community Repository<\/span>, including its <\/span>in-house <\/span>Workflow Management System<\/span>,<\/span> to upload and ingest items to a Fedora-based <\/span>platform<\/span>. <\/span>With the guidance and hands-on participation of RUL web developers Sam McDonalds and Eva Chan, <\/span>a public-facing Drupal-based <\/span>homepage<\/span> was developed <\/span>on the RUL site<\/span> for the collection<\/span>, featuring <\/span><\/a>a <\/span>Digital Collections search portal<\/span>,<\/span><\/a> which helps<\/span> navigate<\/span> and access<\/span> a great deal of the resources on early alcohol studies<\/span> with ease<\/span>. <\/span>Graduate assistant Kate Greenberg from the <\/span>Master of Information program <\/span>(archives track) <\/span>at Rutgers School of Communication & Information<\/span> was instrumental in the daily work of processing items.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former CAS librarian William Bejarano<\/span> worked as a consultant on this project. In 2021, he <\/span>used the <\/span>digital <\/span>archive<\/span>, which was then a work very much in progress,<\/span> as a case study for his students in<\/span> the Digital Libraries course, part of the Master of Information program at Rutgers School of Communication & Information<\/span>. Its current more<\/span> completed form<\/span> will serve as a fine <\/span>example <\/span>for the<\/span> same course in the<\/span> coming semester. <\/span>Observing<\/span> the collection as a case study<\/span>, <\/span>it allows students to engage with <\/span>novel<\/span> challenges <\/span>encountered when<\/span> archiv<\/span>ing<\/span> the emergence of a multidisciplinary academic field, <\/span>as well as<\/span> assess <\/span>its <\/span>value based on its novelty, rarity, discoverability, <\/span>navigable design<\/span>,<\/span> and intuitive organization. <\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>end <\/span>result<\/span><\/h4>\n

From its beginnings, CAS has provided a model for multidisciplinary collaboration among scientists, social scientists, and practitioners; and it has also been a pioneer of socially engaged scholarship to advocate for treating addiction as a disease rather than stigmatizing it as a moral failing.<\/span> S<\/span>panning past and present<\/span>,<\/span> t<\/span>he c<\/span>ollaboration between <\/span>information professionals<\/span> and researchers<\/span> within diverse <\/span>units <\/span>at Yale and Rutgers <\/span>will continue to <\/span>assist researchers in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n
