It seems most appropriate for us to present the results of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\">Digital Alcohol Studies Archives<\/a> project to our most immediate community this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This time it\u2019s not just the royal plural. Again, I invited all parties involved in the project to participate in our talk hosted by Rutgers University Libraries faculty Scholarly and Professional Actives Committee (SAPAC) on December 19, following up on <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.rutgers.edu\/SAPAC\/Ward\">a similar talk in 2021<\/a>. Everyone was excited to join me, whether in person or by sending slides for their contribution to be properly represented. The full list is as follows, the abstract is at the end of this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2682\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357-300x173.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357-300x173.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357-1024x592.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357-768x444.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/619\/2023\/12\/IMG_4357.jpeg 1513w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\nPre-Talk Questions\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are some of my own, very personal pre-presentation thoughts and questions. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Was the failure, i.e., the shutdown of the Alcohol Library in 2016, a major roadblock or a stepping stone (one can\u2019t help remembering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steppingstones.org\/\">Stepping Stones<\/a> in this context, of course)? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can I still remain the driving force behind this project? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It took me a while (and the slowdown of the pandemic in 2020) to eventually find some meaning in the failure of the original Digital Alcohol Studies Archives project (abandoned due to the library\u2019s closure &#8211; for external reasons still way beyond my understanding, I must add).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Obviously, I spent months, if not years, trying to decipher (often feeling that it was all in vain) what just happened &#8211; through endless discussions with my trusted former coworkers\/friends. It was comforting to continue to talk to them, in our usual (sometimes ironic and borderline sarcastic) manner. &#8220;And what we learned from this is \u2026&#8221; was our typical attitude to failure in the Alcohol Library, followed by: &#8220;Next.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s nothing one can do about major external decisions but take a deep breath and assess the situation. That\u2019s exactly what I did. Regrouping and trying to find how this new setup could work for the project, rather than against it, pointed me to the tasks that can still (and should) be completed and finding new allies in addition to the ones I already had. Then, along with my partners, many of us runners, I just went full NIKE, &#8220;just do it,&#8221; also aware that &#8220;there\u2019s no finish line.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As a result, CAS Archives content is well represented in its digital version now. I\u2019m delighted to see that the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.rutgers.edu\/cas-library\/\">updated CAS Library page<\/a> reflects it too and our promotional video has found its permanent home on the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DCR5zjKArE4?si=Dm3OsQTiHQ36RRwg\">GSAPP YouTube channel<\/a>. Although this WordPress site still beats it, the Drupal homepage also shows up early enough in Google searches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Pre-Talk Takeaway<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My answer to the initial questions is that the roadblock, broken down with the help of like-minded individuals, can be turned into stepping stones, and only I could (and should) be the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/notable-people\/jellinek\/\">Jellinekian<\/a>-type mastermind behind the scenes. A tall order, but challenge accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next: I can\u2019t wait to hear what our audiences will take away from this talk, or another one planned for subject specialist librarians, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.rutgers.edu\/it-takes-a-village-the-digital-alcohol-studies-archives-at-rutgers\/\">press release<\/a> and scholarly article (accepted with revisions, as of December 8).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Abstract<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Listed on the Rutgers University Libraries <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Digital Collections<\/span><\/a> portal, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Digital Alcohol Studies Archives<\/span><\/a> Collection is the deliverable of a one-semester sabbatical leave. Following up on their <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.rutgers.edu\/SAPAC\/Ward\"><span class=\"s2\">presentation on the pilot<\/span><\/a> in 2021, a group of collaborators from NBL and Central units will provide insight from multiple perspectives on launching a digital project, selecting and assessing content, determining the right tools to deliver that content, developing and testing workflows, and refining processes. They will use concrete examples to demonstrate practices and solutions that can be extended, universally applied, or customized, and would be beneficial for the community of librarians, archivists, and researchers who are considering starting similar projects. Selected from the digital artifacts and remnants of the defunct Alcohol Studies Library and Archives, 1,000+ items have been added to <a href=\"https:\/\/rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu\/search\/results\/?key=root&amp;q1=Center+of+Alcohol+Studies+Library&amp;q1field=mods%3Aname&amp;q1bool=OR&amp;q2=Temperance&amp;q2field=mods%3Asubject&amp;rtype%5B%5D=&amp;orderby=dateasc&amp;numresults=50&amp;c%5B0%5D=\"><span class=\"s2\">RUcore\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies-archives.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Omeka<\/span><\/a>. They are promoted via a public-facing Drupal-based landing page on the RUL site, featuring a <a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholstudies.libraries.rutgers.edu\/digital-collection\"><span class=\"s2\">Digital Collections search portal<\/span><\/a>.
