\"Jellinek's<\/a><\/span>Discovered accidentally among a stack of unrelated documents in the Mark Keller Collection<\/a> at the Center of Alcohol Studies Archives in 2012, the yellowing image symbolizes the big EMJ-mystery, referring to the adventurous life of E. M. Jellinek<\/a>, one of the founders of alcohol science. An unorthodox 4\u00d75-inch ex libris<\/em> marked with the initials E.M.J. features a perplexed ape contemplating a human skull while sitting on a book entitled \u201cDarwin.\u201d<\/p>\n

The original sculpture often attributed to Francisco Ramo, reflecting on Rodin\u2019s Thinker<\/em> and Darwin\u2019s evolution theory, was very popular in the 20th<\/sup> century, and replicas show up for sale all over the Internet. However, the \u201cPhilosophizing Monkey Statuette\u201d, as it\u2019s also known,\u00a0was actually created by a late-19th<\/sup>-century German sculptor Wolfgang Hugo Rheinhold. This bronze statuette, entitled Affe, einen Sch\u00e4del betrachtend<\/em><\/a> (\u201cMonkey contemplating a skull\u201d), was first exhibited at the Gro\u00dfe Berliner Kunstaustellung (Great Berlin Art Exhibition) in 1893.<\/p>\n

The bookplate replaces the word \u201cEvolution\u201d with \u201cDarwin,\u201d and the book in the front reads \u201cEX LIBRIS E.M.J.\u201d in block capitals. The sketch was drawn by Vera Efron, who ran the indexing and abstracting services at the Yale Center of Alcohol Studies, later the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies.<\/p>\n

A talented artist, she illustrated seminal books and pamphlets of early alcohol studies, such as Alcohol Explored<\/a> by Howard Haggard and E. M. Jellinek, and Drinking and intoxication<\/a> by Raymond McCarthy. Her doodles and artwork show up in various archival documents, including her famous sketches of E. M. Jellinek<\/a> and Mark Keller<\/a>.<\/p>\n
