Publisher: Edgar A. Poe, 1845‑1846.

A literary periodical edited by Charles Briggs, ambitious

young litterateur who had written for the Knickerbocker;

contributors included Edgar Allan Poe and other well‑known

writers. Literary reviews were the chief subject, but art

criticism, comment on theater and music, political articles,

and poetry were also included. Serialized material included

an extensive review of the exhibition of the National

Academy of Art, and articles on the use of color in

painting. Political comment opposed the Mexican War and was

occasionally illustrated by cartoons engraved on wood.Cf.
