Launched in fall 2025, the Certificate in Arabic at Rutgers-Newark offers RU-N students a credential to demonstrate language proficiency and cultural competency in Arabic language and culture.
The certificate requires students to show Arabic language competency through the advanced level combined with coursework in translation/translation studies, cultural studies and history. The Certificate is independent of the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS) minor, but students who wish to complete the Arabic Certificate and the MEIS minor will have the opportunity to share up to 6 credits between the two programs.
Book Talk: Dust That Never Settles: Literary Afterlives of the Iran-Iraq War
March 4 @ 2:30 pm
Join us for a conversation about Dr. Amir Moosavi’s recently published book Dust That Never Settles: Literary Afterlives of the Iran-Iraq War. The book is the first comparative study of Arabic and Persian literature from the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). It traces the ways in which writers from both countries have wrestled with state-sponsored narratives of war from 1980 until the present moment, transforming war literature from propaganda to narratives of resistance against authoritarian regimes, their legacies, and their present politics.
Speakers:
Amir Moosavi (Rutgers-Newark)
Fatemeh Shams (University of Pennsylvania)
Khaled Al Hilli (New York University)
