Certificate Requirements
Educational Program
The interdisciplinary certificate in Arabic consists of 15 credits. Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all courses.
There are three pathways to completion for the Arabic Certificate:
Pathway 1:
(Suitable for students with elementary knowledge of Arabic)
• Students must complete 12 credits of Arabic language courses above the 101 level (eg:102, 131, 132, 301, 302, media, etc.).
• Students must complete 3 elective credits in courses related to the history and culture of the Arab world and/or its diasporic communities.
Pathway 2:
(Suitable for Arabic speakers who can place out of Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic II, i.e., above 132)
• Students must complete 6-9 credits of Arabic language at the 200+ level.
• Students must complete 6-9 elective credits in courses related to Arab history and culture.
Pathway 3:
(Suitable for students who are primarily interested in translation and/or combining this certificate with the Minor in Translation and Interpretation Studies)
• Students must complete 6 credits of Arabic language at the 200+ level.
• Students must take “Introduction to Translation Studies” (21:940:240)
• Students must complete either “Internship in Translation & Interpreting” (21:940:459) OR a 3-credit study abroad, internship abroad, or internship course. Any of these courses should have an Arabic language focus to count for credit.
• Students need 3 elective credits in courses related to Arab history and culture, or the history and culture of the Arab world and/or its diasporic communities.
