The Being First Collaborative interested me specifically for the collaboration work and the hands-on process. I have always been captivated by learning new ways to find and build community. Building community means I can share my passion for fighting social injustice, which led me to want to raise awareness and plan strategies for organized social change. I knew that the Being First Collaborative would be the perfect opportunity as the group can help future first-generation students in the classroom – and it starts with the professors. Inclusive learning is essential; thanks to resourceful and considerate professors, I am motivated to move progressively in my academic success. An inclusive classroom involves transparent discussions about social injustices, informing students about resources, and never assuming all students have the same support. First-generation students seek support from instructors when navigating college since starting school feels like being thrown into the water. Stories, shared experiences, and education from various perspectives allow for transparent and effective learning. It is more than just a few resources on the syllabus – but learning and informing students about; extracurricular activities, advisor information, listing Cultural Centers, and campus opportunities. When professors and students meet one another halfway, we can all succeed at Rutgers University.
