When I learned about the Being First Collaborative I realized that it would be a great opportunity to share my opinion and personal experiences being a first generation student. Being first gen has been a unique experience and it is something that is not talked about a lot in college. This project has allowed me to meet people that relate to my experiences and has also allowed me to learn more about their own journey through college. This project has also introduced me to programs and resources that are beneficial to me and other first generation students. Joining this project allows me to provide faculty with ways to help students and create an environment where they are able to succeed. Many times professors expect students to know the college process and are unaware of resources that are available to first gen students. Being able to share these resources, experiences, and data with faculty is something important to me because it will allow other first gen students to have easier access to important information.
An inclusive classroom to me looks like a welcoming environment. A classroom with a professor or faculty member that takes the time to inform themselves about the different types of students they have in the classroom. That we all have responsibilities outside of the classroom and may not be aware of the resources provided by Rutgers. Taking the time to share these resources with us and explaining why it is important can really help students academically.
