Contrary to what oral history has perpetuated, the word \u201cBunky\u201d does not mean \u201clittle radish\u201d in Hungarian, which Jellinek, as a native speaker, knew was nonsense, but he insisted on the nickname nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/08\/BB46DBDA-0991-4ED1-83C1-2F845BE4FFFC.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5343\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/08\/BB46DBDA-0991-4ED1-83C1-2F845BE4FFFC-179x300.jpeg\" alt=\"A bust of Jellinek called the Bunky\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/08\/BB46DBDA-0991-4ED1-83C1-2F845BE4FFFC-179x300.jpeg 179w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/08\/BB46DBDA-0991-4ED1-83C1-2F845BE4FFFC.jpeg 487w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>A coworker for many years, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/notable-people\/mark-keller\/\">Mark Keller<\/a>, editor-in-chief of QJSA, might be held accountable for many of these myths spreading them inadvertently spread during his attempts to write Jellinek\u2019s biography. His correspondence with Jellinek&#8217;s wife, Thelma Anderson includes several unpublished manuscripts that attest to Jellinek\u2019s multiple talents and passion for philology.<\/p>\n<p>Bunkyana is the umbrella term of these artifacts written by or related to Jellinek.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them have been preserved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/alcoholstudies-archives\/\">Alcohol Studies Archives<\/a> of the Center of Alcohol Studies, at Rutgers University.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a typewritten and hand-corrected short document entitled \u201cWho Was Who in Greek Mythology\u201d he shows off his classical learning, linguistic dexterity, and inventive sense of humor, and offers some fascinating traces of his academic pursuits and personal life by retelling classical legends in contemporary language. Jellinek, a polyglot and polymath, delights himself in these private amusements by jumping between registers of meaning.
