we follow the exploits of each successive generation of Buend<span class=\"s2\">\u00ed<\/span>as, and then watch the next generation come up to take their place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The novel goes on as individual plots and characters begin <span class=\"s4\">and end, like the cells replacing themselves in a human body; and yet there are constant echoes from one generation to the next, passing down not only certain names (Jos<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00e9<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> Arcadio, Aureliano, Remedios) but also personality types \u2014 adventurers, mystics, hotheads, lovers, loners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a memorable passage, the Buend<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00ed<\/span><span class=\"s4\">a family is compared to a wheel, slowly wearing down as it turns again and again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both the novelty and the repetition of each new turn offers delight, twinned with the melancholy knowledge that it can\u2019t go on forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><i>One Hundred Years<\/i> of solitude is often cited as a prime example of \u201cmagical realism,\u201d a term for the matter-of-fact way that M<span class=\"s5\">\u00e1<\/span>rquez and his South American contemporaries like Jorge Luis Borges and Isabel Allende introduce otherworldly aspects of their narratives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That phrase has become a bit notorious among literary critics for its overuse; perhaps it\u2019s more accurate to describe <i>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/i> as dreamlike.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only do dreams treat impossible things as simply part of how the world works, dreams also manage to be at once intensely vivid and strangely indistinct in the mind\u2019s eye.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As you\u2019re reading, everything feels fresh in your mind; try to summarize the whole novel, though, and it slips through your grasp as generations of Aurelianos and Jos<span class=\"s5\">\u00e9<\/span> Arcadios blend together \u2014 much as the details of a dream are intense at the time and difficult to recall after waking, except for the way that it made you feel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hundred-Solitude-Harper-Perennial-Classics\/dp\/0060883286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1801 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/03\/100yrsAmzaon-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Book cover\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/03\/100yrsAmzaon-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/03\/100yrsAmzaon-768x1157.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/03\/100yrsAmzaon-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/03\/100yrsAmzaon.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Like immersive novels, dreams are hard to recount once we emerge from their spell because the vivid experience they offer is so radically different from waking life that it starts to melt away on contact.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But both dreams and novels are also ways of working through the materials of real life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/i>, for all its fantastical qualities, is also steeped in history: while Macondo is remote, it is not quite isolated, and the novel reflects the history of Colombia and the region through a funhouse mirror.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are rebellions and civil wars, foreign influences and exploitative industries \u2014 one of the climactic moments, a massacre of striking banana workers, is based on a real 1928 massacre perpetrated by the Colombian army at the request of the United Fruit Company and the U.S. government.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 The occasional eruption of real-world history, even catastrophe, in this otherworldly novel <\/span>makes it a well-suited read for quarantine: this strange, trancelike time of isolation in which we are nonetheless acutely aware of historic events going on all around us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">An ebook of the standard English translation is available <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/OneHundredYearsOfSolitude_201710\/page\/n2\/mode\/2up\">from the Internet Archive.<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Readers fluent in Spanish should consider experiencing <span class=\"s4\">M<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u00e1<\/span><span class=\"s4\">rquez\u2019s extraordinary style directly;
