Stay as long as you want, participate in the discussions as much as you like, or just enjoy reading a new story every other week or so.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/rutgers.instructure.com\/enroll\/XW93BR\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Join Tales We Read<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tales We Read was kicked off on September 23, 2020 with a sprint and flash!<\/p>\n<p>In the first session we are reading and discussing a short story entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/gulfcoastmag.org\/journal\/29.2-summer\/fall-2017\/eight-bites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/gulfcoastmag.org\/journal\/29.2-summer\/fall-2017\/eight-bites\/\">Eight bites<\/a> by <a class=\"instructure_file_link inline_disabled\" href=\"https:\/\/carmenmariamachado.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmen Maria Machado<\/a>.\u00a0 In &#8220;Eight Bites,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carmen_Maria_Machado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmen Maria Machado <\/a>goes inside the mind of a woman who undergoes <a href=\"http:\/\/sk.sagepub.com.proxy.libraries.rutgers.edu\/reference\/the-sage-encyclopedia-of-abnormal-and-clinical-psychology\/i7439.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bariatric weight loss surgery<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s often said that food is family, and the relationship of Machado&#8217;s narrator to food and her own body is refracted through her relationships with the women of her family: an iron-willed mother, gossipy sisters, and a concerned daughter.\u00a0Weaving realistic storytelling with a surrealist twist, Machado explores the complicated feelings around a simple clinical procedure: desire, shame, love, envy, and a sense of having &#8220;lost&#8221; something more than merely weight.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the story <a class=\"instructure_file_link inline_disabled\" href=\"http:\/\/gulfcoastmag.org\/journal\/29.2-summer\/fall-2017\/eight-bites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Carmen Maria Machado<\/strong> (born 1986) is an American <a title=\"Short story\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Short_story\">short story<\/a> author, essayist, and critic frequently published in <i><a title=\"The New Yorker\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\">The New Yorker<\/a><\/i>, <i><a title=\"Granta\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Granta\">Granta<\/a><\/i>, <i><a title=\"Lightspeed (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lightspeed_(magazine)\">Lightspeed Magazine<\/a><\/i>, and other publications. She has been a finalist for the <a title=\"National Book Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Book_Award\">National Book Award<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-National_Book_Award_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carmen_Maria_Machado#cite_note-National_Book_Award-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>and the <a title=\"Nebula Award for Best Novelette\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebula_Award_for_Best_Novelette\">Nebula Award for Best Novelette<\/a>. Her stories have been reprinted in <i>Year\u2019s Best Weird Fiction<\/i><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carmen_Maria_Machado#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><i>, Best American Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy, Best Horror of the Year,<\/i> <i>The New Voices of Fantasy<\/i>, and <i>Best Women&#8217;s Erotica<\/i>. Her story collection <i><a title=\"Her Body and Other Parties\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Her_Body_and_Other_Parties\">Her Body and Other Parties<\/a><\/i> was published in 2017. Her memoir <i><a title=\"In the Dream House\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/In_the_Dream_House\">In the Dream House<\/a><\/i> was published in 2019.
