With a sketch, caption, or both relating to the owner, the bookplate or &#8220;<i title=\"Latin language text\">ex libris<\/i>&#8221; generally consists of an image\u00a0 followed by an inscription such as &#8220;from the books of&#8230;&#8221; or &#8220;from the library of&#8230;&#8221; the name of the owner.<\/p>\n<p>Pinboards of virtual bookplate collections are popular on Pinterest: <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.pinterest.com\/henkweltje9\/exlibris-bookplates-celebrities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Bookplates of Celebrities\u00a0<\/a> (such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rudyard Kipling, Walt Disney, and more) or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/kenneth0399\/bookplates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bookplates<\/a>. There are plenty of bookplates to read about in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/ex-libris-the-bookplates-of-31-famous-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blogs<\/a> (e.g., Theodore Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and more), and browse on <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/groups\/15984222@N00\/?rb=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a>.\u00a0 However, Carl Junge&#8217;s book <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Hva2c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ex libris<\/a>, a collection<span class=\"main-heading\"> of original book-plate design, may give a hint that there might be even more to the popularity of bookplates than art itself.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No shame in admitting that I jumped on the bandwagon to share with the world my favorite ex libris ever, alcohol researcher E. M. Jellinek&#8217;s monkey-Hamlet-thinker, in the Newsletter of the Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS) Library in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"main-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2924 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/10\/EMJbookplate-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jellinek's bookplate\" width=\"190\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/10\/EMJbookplate-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/10\/EMJbookplate-811x1024.jpg 811w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/10\/EMJbookplate-768x970.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2020\/10\/EMJbookplate.jpg 859w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/span>Discovered accidentally among a stack of unrelated documents in the Mark Keller Collection at the Center of Alcohol Studies Archives in 2012, the yellowing image symbolizes the big EMJ-mystery, referring to the adventurous life of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27172569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E. M. Jellinek<\/a>, one of the founders of alcohol science. An unorthodox 4\u00d75-inch <em>ex libris<\/em> marked with the initials E.M.J. features a perplexed ape contemplating a human skull while sitting on a book entitled \u201cDarwin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original sculpture often attributed to Francisco Ramo, reflecting on Rodin\u2019s <em>Thinker<\/em> and Darwin\u2019s evolution theory, was very popular in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, and replicas show up for sale all over the Internet. However, the \u201cPhilosophizing Monkey Statuette\u201d, as it\u2019s also known,\u00a0was actually created by a late-19<sup>th<\/sup>-century German sculptor Wolfgang Hugo Rheinhold. This bronze statuette, entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Affe_mit_Sch%C3%A4del\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Affe, einen Sch\u00e4del betrachtend<\/em><\/a> (\u201cMonkey contemplating a skull\u201d), was first exhibited at the Gro\u00dfe Berliner Kunstaustellung (Great Berlin Art Exhibition) in 1893.<\/p>\n<p>The bookplate replaces the word \u201cEvolution\u201d with \u201cDarwin,\u201d and the book in the front reads \u201cEX LIBRIS E.M.J.\u201d in block capitals. The sketch was drawn by Vera Efron, who ran the indexing and abstracting services at the Yale Center of Alcohol Studies, later the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies.<\/p>\n<p>A talented artist, she illustrated seminal books and pamphlets of early alcohol studies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dTfeSY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alcohol Explored<\/a> by Howard Haggard and E. M. Jellinek, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Hzm2JC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drinking and intoxication<\/a> by Raymond McCarthy. Her doodles and artwork show up in various archival documents, including her famous sketches of E. M.
