Although these books are not available in the Rutgers Libraries collection, we were thrilled to read that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2020\/11\/09\/biden-dog-major-champ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dogs are returning to the White House<\/a>! In addition to the Wikipedia entry on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_presidential_pets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States presidential pets<\/a>, there are several articles on presidents and their dogs or cats all over the world and going back to centuries.<\/p>\n<p>HINT: If you want to skip the text below, you can simply check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/museumofthedog.org\/museum-attractions\/current-exhibitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Presidential Dogs&#8221; exhibit<\/a> from the AKC Museum of the Dog. A virtual tour available with any suggested donation, starting at $1.00 from <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 2020 <\/span>through <span class=\"xn-chron\">January 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To begin with, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/george-washington-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Washington bred hunting dogs for speed<\/a>. Roosevelt had while in the White House. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the Cold War, a heartwarming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-24837199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gift arrived<\/a> in the White House from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to US President John F Kennedy. It was a dog called Pushinka, whose mother, Strelka, was one of the first dogs to fly into space (and return alive). Barack Obama&#8217;s Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, was so popular that he became the hero of children&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bo-Obama-United-States-America\/dp\/1442156449\">books<\/a> and the model for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouseholidays.com\/productv2.aspx?id=6829&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAnvj9BRA4EiwAuUMDf4KQsXkYr4qBMq9yA_CNLnnnmdnhYFkZ_ASVSUKGTIWp66GyrJbLJBoC9V4QAvD_BwE\">plush toy<\/a> still available in the White House online gift shop. A <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/blog\/2012\/02\/09\/archives-bo-after-blizzard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blizzard is more tolerable<\/a> if you have a dog to entertain you!<\/p>\n<p>Moving overseas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogster.com\/the-scoop\/meet-frances-first-dog-nemo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first dog of France, Nemo<\/a>, is a Labrador Retriever-Wirehaired Pointing Griffon mix. President Macron&#8217;s pet was named after Captain Nemo, the submarine commander in the Jules Verne classic <em>Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea<\/em>, reportedly one of Macron\u2019s favorite books.<\/p>\n<p>The people of Ireland love their president for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/people-love-ireland-president-michael-higgins\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=organic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">love of dogs,<\/a>\u00a0although the position of President in Ireland is largely ceremonial. Michael Daniel Higgins, Irish politician, poet, sociologist, and broadcaster, has served as the ninth President of Ireland and is often pictured with one of his two dogs, S\u00edoda and Br\u00f3d, who have their own Twitter account. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishcentral.com\/news\/michael-d-higgins-dog-sioda-dies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news of S\u00edoda&#8217;s passing<\/a> was met with widespread dismay in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>For the cat lovers among us: rumor has it that, in addition to DOTUS, we may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/28\/us\/Biden-cat-dogs-German-shepherd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COTUS.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do we have your attention?
