If you haven\u2019t done so, here is a delightful read for all book lovers, history buffs, and anyone interested in tidbits about famous titles.<\/p>\n<p>The collection of\u00a0<a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/03\/15\/books\/books-review-anniversary.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20210316&amp;instance_id=28100&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=113672367&amp;segment_id=53490&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=f55d1f52f31f3847c56766603ef02bd5\">125 years of books that were reviewed in the New York Times<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> spans from light topics, such as\u00a0Jack London at a dog dinner and Winnie-the-Pooh to verses on the loss of the Titanic and current topics on race, equity, and health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">See some highlights as follows. The source of the descriptions is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/03\/15\/books\/books-review-anniversary.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20210316&amp;instance_id=28100&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=113672367&amp;segment_id=53490&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=f55d1f52f31f3847c56766603ef02bd5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">original article<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1903<\/strong> In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2OsRTPX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Souls of Black Folk<\/a>\u201d \u2014 now widely accepted as a foundational text of American intellectual history \u2014 W.E.B. Du Bois wrote that \u201cthe problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line.\u201d In it, Du Bois also detailed his now-storied critique of Booker T. Washington\u2019s emphasis on economic advancement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1926<\/strong> Shortly after A. A. Milne introduced Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin to the world, one young reader was not so happy: his son, the original Christopher Robin, who <a href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1928\/03\/19\/95562345.html?pageNumber=1\">threatened<\/a> \u201cto take revenge upon his dad by writing poems about him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>1953 <\/b>After the English publication of Simone de Beauvoir\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3vuTqFK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Second Sex<\/a>,\u201d which would go on to shape the modern women\u2019s movement, the male reviewer called it \u201ca truly magnificent book, even if sometimes irritating to a mere male.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">1962<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> \u201c<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3trWu3M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silent Spring<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">,\u201d Rachel Carson\u2019s investigation into the use of pesticides, awakened readers to their insidious and destructive effects and helped spur the modern environmental movement. Our reviewers grasped the urgency of Carson\u2019s contribution: \u201cIt is high time for people to know about these rapid changes in their environment, and to take an effective part in the battle that may shape the future of all life on earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1968 <\/strong>\u201cBecause the summer of 1968 promises \u2014 or threatens \u2014 to be a critical one in American life,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1968\/06\/02\/90668200.html?pageNumber=101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote the Book Review<\/a> on June 2 of that year, \u201cprominent novelists and critics were asked to address themselves once more to the old but lively question of \u2018engagement.\u2019 Many writers responded, including Malcolm Cowley, Gore Vidal and Joyce Carol Oates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987 <\/strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3tqfbVj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">And the Band Played On<\/a>,\u201d Randy Shilts\u2019s account of the origins and aftermath of the AIDS epidemic, was one of the first books to investigate the indifference and neglect of the American government and medical establishment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988 <\/strong>After \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cE8Hv5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beloved<\/a>\u201d did not win the National Book Award, the Book Review published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/01\/24\/books\/l-black-writers-in-praise-of-toni-morrison-293988.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> in Toni Morrison\u2019s defense drafted by June Jordan and Houston A.
