After all, Chang is a science library! Here comes the missing post about the intersections of poetry and science.<\/p>\n<p>Run a search in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraries.rutgers.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QuickSearch<\/a> or Google the topic, whichever you wish, and you will be surprised. So were we. The following results illustrate only the tip of the proverbial iceberg with a topic presenting itself as a great one for a dissertation. But which department would that candidate fit in? (Nick says &#8220;literature and science&#8221; is indeed a hot topic in literature, if not the other way around!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4349 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience-300x300.png\" alt=\"poem\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PoeSonnetToScience.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tweetspeakpoetry.com\/2016\/08\/18\/top-10-science-poems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top ten science poems<\/a> are some oldies, such as Edgar Allan Poe&#8217;s poem from 1829, <em>Sonnet &#8211; To Science<\/em> and Walt Whitman&#8217;s <em>When I Heard the Learn\u2019d Astronomer <\/em>from 1865.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ties between poetry go way back in time as explained, with some great examples, in a post entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanscientist.org\/article\/science-and-poetry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science and Poetry<\/a> in the <em>American Scientist. <\/em>Looking around a bit more, one discovers some disputes, such as an article figuring out which really was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2012\/07\/12\/first-science-poem-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first-ever poem published in a scientific journal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4352\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer-300x300.png\" alt=\"poem\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/WhitmanAstronomer.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>National magazines and scholarly journals got involved long ago. An article <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/how-poetry-can-help-communicate-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How poetry can help communicate science<\/a> in <em>Scientific American e<\/em>xplains that poetry is an effective medium through which to communicate new research and even advance scientific knowledge. The author, Sam Illingworth, also writes <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoetryofscience.scienceblog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Poetry of Science blog<\/a>, which presents new scientific research via the medium of poetry, along with podcasts and a book entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk\/9781526127983\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A sonnet to science: Scientists and their poetry<\/a> by the same author (Manchester University Press, 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Then there is this article in <em>The New Yorker<\/em>, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/ode-stethoscope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ode on a stethoscope<\/a>, which provides a some background on poetry published in medical journals. Additionally, <span class=\"ILfuVd c3biWd\"><span class=\"hgKElc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dBTTh3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JAMA<\/a>, the <em>Journal of the American Medical Association,<\/em> a peer-reviewed medical journal, actually has a whole section called <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/collections\/44062\/poetry-and-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"header--name\">Poetry and Medicine,<\/span><\/a> which publishes poems written by artists and physicians to address the experience and meanings of healing and illness. A heart-wrenching poem entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dwIQqX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alzheimer Aubade<\/a> written by Marjorie Maddox is just one sample of this extraordinary selection, going back to 1998 (Rutgers-restricted).<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that there has been a <span class=\"in\">Hippocrates Conference on Poetry and Medicine held annually for over ten years? The Hippocrates Initiative for Poetry and Medicine also solicits entries for the <a href=\"http:\/\/hippocrates-poetry.org\/the-hippocrates-prize\/2021-hippocrates-prize\/2021-hippocrates-prize\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hippocrates Prize Awards<\/a> every year in three categories; one of them is solely for health service employees, students and anyone working in education and training of health professional students and staff.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-hdgSans c-hdgSans_2 c-mix-hdgSans_inline\">For those with an aversion to science, a source that we must have mentioned a few times this month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poetry Foundation,<\/a> comes to help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/articles\/68660\/ten-poems-to-get-you-through-science-class-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ten Poems to Get You Through Science Class This Year<\/a>\u2013\u2013among them one entitled <em>Poker Star<\/em> by Richard Brautigan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-feature-hd\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4361\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/04\/PokerStar.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Check out some other thematic collections from the Poetry Foundation:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"c-hdgSerif c-hdgSerif_1 c-mix-hdgSerif_lowProfile\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/collections\/145189\/poems-of-illness-5a319c160b730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poems of Sickness, Illness, and Recovery<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"c-hdgSerif c-hdgSerif_1 c-mix-hdgSerif_lowProfile\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/collections\/145091\/poetry-and-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poetry and Food<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"c-hdgSerif c-hdgSerif_1 c-mix-hdgSerif_lowProfile\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/collections\/146462\/poetry-and-the-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poetry and the Environment<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-feature-bd\">\n<div>\n<p>Finally, another great resource, the Poem Hunter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poemhunter.com\/poems\/science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lists 446 poems related to science<\/a> written by famous poets. These poems can be on the shorter side and as such provide some instant gratification for those who love reading poetry and reflecting on what they have read.
