{"id":5739,"date":"2021-10-06T14:58:22","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T14:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/?p=5739"},"modified":"2021-10-17T21:42:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T21:42:02","slug":"banned-books-scua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/banned-books-scua\/","title":{"rendered":"The Banned Books of Rutgers Special Collections and University Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5751 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World_2.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Books have been banned, challenged, censored, or even burned by\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">organizations, schools, and parent organizations for a lot of reasons.\u00a0 What defines a banned or a challenged book?\u00a0 A banned book is one that has been removed from the shelves completely.\u00a0 Books that have been challenged are an attempt by a person or group to remove or restrict materials to protect others.\u00a0 Books have been challenged for being considered \u201csexually explicit,\u201d for having \u201coffensive language,\u201d or for being \u201cunsuited to any age group.\u201d\u00a0 At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraries.rutgers.edu\/new-brunswick\/visit-study\/locations\/special-collections-university-archives\">Rutgers Special Collections and University Archives<\/a>, we have a collection of over 53,000 books, pamphlets, and broadside.\u00a0 With that many books in our collections, we have a number of books that have been banned over the years.\u00a0 Here are a few books from our collections and why they were banned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Adventures-of-Huckleberry-Finn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5756 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Adventures-of-Huckleberry-Finn-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Books\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/em> by Mark Twain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/em> has been a controversial book since its first printing in 1884.\u00a0 The Concord Public Library banned the book in 1885 for its &#8220;coarse language&#8221; and today it continues to be challenged\/banned for its use of racial stereotypes and slurs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Animal-Farm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5746 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Animal-Farm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Book\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Animal Farm <\/em><\/strong><strong>by George Orwell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The book was completed in 1943 but could not find a publisher because of its criticism of the USSR, an important ally during WWII.\u00a0 It was finally published, but was banned in the USSR and other communist countries.\u00a0 The book is still banned today in North Korea, and censored in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5749 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Areopagitica.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Areopagitica; A speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc\u2019d Printing, to the Parlament of England <\/em>by John Milton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Milton wrote <em>Areopagitica <\/em>in 1644 to argued for the freedom of speech and expression and opposing the licensing and censorship by the English Parlament.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5750 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Brave-New-World-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Books\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Brave New World <\/em>by Aldous Huxley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>According to <em>The Guardian<\/em>, <em>Brave New World<\/em> is among the top ten books Americans want banned for its contempt for religion, marriage and family, as well as its references to sex and drugs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5752\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Candide-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Open book\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Candide by Voltaire<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Candide<\/em> was another book which was banned upon its release in 1759 by the Great Council of Geneva and the administrators of Paris.\u00a0 It was later banned in the United States in 1930 for obscenity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5757 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/The-Communist-Manifesto.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The Communist Manifesto<\/em> by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Communist Manifesto<\/em> was banned by many countries around the world to prevent the spread of communism.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Howl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5753 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Howl-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Howl<\/em> by Allen Ginsberg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The poem was part of a 1957 obscenity trial for the topics of illegal drugs and sexual practices.\u00a0 A California State Superior Court ruled that the poem was of \u201csocial importance,\u201d and dismissed the case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5805\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"open book\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/leaves-of-grass.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Leaves of Grass<\/em> by Walt Whitman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poetry collection was considered obscene upon its release in 1855. Libraries refused to buy the book, and the poem was legally banned in Boston in the 1880s and informally banned elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5754 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Jungle.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The Jungle <\/em><\/strong><strong>by Upton Sinclair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Jungle <\/em>was banned in a number of counties around the world including Yugoslavia, South Korea and East Germany.\u00a0 The Nazi party in Germany actually burning the book in 1933 because of the socialist views.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Of-Mice-and-Men.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5755 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Of-Mice-and-Men-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Of Mice and Men <\/em>by John Steinbeck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Of Mice and Men <\/em>is often found on the American Library Association\u2019s list of banned books for its use of racial slurs, profanity, vulgarity, and offensive language.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/scary-stories.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5806 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/scary-stories-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"pgae in a book\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark <\/em>by Alvin Schwartz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This series of children\u2019s books based on folklore and urban legend is on the American Library Association\u2019s list of most challenged series of books from 1990\u20131999 and is listed as the seventh most challenged from 2000\u20132009 for violence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5748 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/Are-you-there-god.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Tiger Eyes <\/em>and <em>Are You There God?
