Since I just taught such a class for one of my favorite colleagues, a SEBS\u00a0instructor and researcher who deeply cares about her students, I thought I&#8217;d share what a librarian can accomplish in about an hour. The next installment of the &#8220;Cite Right&#8221; series under <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/category\/science-communication\/\">Science Communication<\/a> from Books We Read uses resources from Rutgers University Libraries, such as the freely available research guides or <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.rutgers.edu\/\">LibGuides<\/a> and citation management software applications (NetID is required in some cases).<\/p>\n<h3>Why citations matter<\/h3>\n<p>Citations allow your readers to trace back to the source and verify the information. Failing to cite properly might look like &#8220;borrowing&#8221; ideas, which equals plagiarism.<\/p>\n<h3>On plagiarism<\/h3>\n<p>Plagiarism is \u201can act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author&#8217;s work as one&#8217;s own, as by not crediting the original author\u201d (<i>Source: dictionary.com). <\/i>For example, using someone else&#8217;s words or ideas without acknowledgment, or even worse, copying another person\u2019s writing and passing it as one\u2019s own.<\/p>\n<h3>How to avoid plagiarism<\/h3>\n<p>Plagiarism is often a result of being rushed. Planning ahead and allowing plenty of time is half the success. Developing one&#8217;s own note taking habits is next in line, including the use of the Citation tool and the Permalink feature in QuickSearch. Citation style guides, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/\">Purdue OWL<\/a> with various citation manuals and <a href=\"http:\/\/tgers.edu\/research-tools-and-services\/citation-management\">citation management applications<\/a> are available to help. See also the guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.rutgers.edu\/plagiarism\">Plagiarism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s a citation manager?<\/h3>\n<p>A citation management system is your personal database that allows you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Import and collect citation information such as author, date, format, and title<\/li>\n<li>Create and organize customized research libraries<\/li>\n<li>Create a bibliography automatically for works cited in your paper<\/li>\n<li>Add in-text references to your paper<\/li>\n<li>Link to the full-text article for future retrieval<\/li>\n<li>Save and take notes on PDFs<\/li>\n<li>Organize your sources using tags or folders<\/li>\n<li>Share your collections with others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"\/\/libapps.s3.amazonaws.com\/accounts\/60858\/images\/RW_workflow2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"68\" data-cke-saved-src=\"\/\/libapps.s3.amazonaws.com\/accounts\/60858\/images\/RW_workflow2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why is it useful?<\/h3>\n<p>Citation managers are a <b>cloud-based<\/b> research and <b>bibliographic management tools <\/b>providing <b>access<\/b> to your references and documents\u00a0<b>from any computer or mobile device<\/b>.
