After the lockdown in Spring 2020, Books We Read came up with the idea of “Virtual Pet Therapy” as a new, safe practice during the pandemic to continue to benefit from the distraction our furry friends can provide.

One of our most popular pages is DOTUS, aka presidential dogs, a blog post about various dogs in the White House. No wonder, with all those cute doggie pictures included! We would like to invite you to visit the page, in loving memory of Champ, the presidential dog, who passed away last year.

The Virtual Pet Therapy Galleries were next. The brief posts below explain our (rather arbitrary) “selection criteria.” These are pets of librarians, after all.

Virtual Pet Therapy 2020 – instead of the usual pet therapy in the library, we came up with the idea of a virtual pet therapy, including various pets, inviting everyone to submit a picture of their new “coworkers”

Virtual Pet Therapy 2021 – although we were back on campus in 2021, we couldn’t bring the puppies to the library for an in-house stressbuster event, so we added more to the picture gallery of our pets.

This year, unfortunately, for many of us, there’s a lot more to worry about than just finals and Covid. However, our companion animals never fail to cheer us up in the most difficult periods of our lives, whether a pandemic pet or an abandoned cat or dog in the wartorn Ukraine, looking for care and love of humans.

Featuring innocent cats and dogs exposed to inhuman circumstances in The Virtual Pet Therapy 2022 galleries, we would like to illustrate how a little bit of caring for pets goes not only a long way, but goes both ways.

Warning: Some of the images may contain visual references to the ongoing Russian occupation of Ukraine.

Gallery: Dogs in wartimes

Gallery: Cats in wartimes

Source: UkrARMY cats & dogs from @UAarmy_animals

Check out all our Stressbusters posts.

Fact: Pets are very popular at library stressbuster events.
