If you love books, you must be horrified to see images of shelled buildings and piles of burning books, as one can\u2019t help following the news about Ukraine. The images keep coming: television, newspapers, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, your choice of media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>A year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, our heart goes out to the fallen and their loved ones, to the ones who were forced to leave everything behind for the unknown, to the ones in the trenches, literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n<p>The world learned to drop the definite article before the name of the country (read our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/books-we-read-about-ukraine\/\">Books We Read About Ukraine<\/a> to see the significance), President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/02\/20\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-travel-to-kyiv-ukraine\/\">visited the war-scarred Kyiv,<\/a>\u00a0the Eiffel Tower and other landmark buildings went blue and yellow all over the world. It\u2019s been a whole year. We can\u2019t help thinking of the unsung heroes too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We admire the Ukrainian professor <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynewshungary.com\/this-hungarian-professor-from-transcarpathia-gives-online-classes-from-the-front\/\">whose photo went viral<\/a>: a notebook in one hand, a cell phone in the other, giving lectures to his students from the trenches. His name is \u0424\u0435\u0434\u0456\u0440 \u0428\u0430\u043d\u0434\u043e\u0440, transliterated into English as\u00a0Fedir Shandor, into Hungarian as\u00a0S\u00e1ndor Ferenc \/ Fegyir \u00a0&#8211; he\u2019s from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zakarpattia_Oblast\">Zakarpattia<\/a>, an area where someone might have lived in several different countries within the past hundred years without ever leaving their village, as borders were pushed around by wars and treaties. People speaking different languages at home (Hungarian for one) were living peacefully together. The trenches are covered in snow again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire Ukrainian librarians for doing their job in public, academic, and special libraries in war-torn cities, towns, and villages in Ukraine: reaching out to their communities and serving their needs, whether providing shelter or books or adding value in other, meaningful ways, unimaginable for a librarian living in peace and safety: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/09\/1085220209\/ukraine-libraries-bomb-shelters\">offering bomb shelters and camouflage classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Oksana-Bruy\">Oksana Bruy<\/a>,\u00a0the president of the Ukrainian Library Association, for her leadership and the role she has taken in not only salvaging and preserving invaluable intellectual treasures, but mobilizing the world to assist. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/ukrainian-voices\/\">international Zoom meeting<\/a> in April 2022, she gave a heatbreaking summary of what the Russian occupation of Ukraine meant to libraries. The pictures she showed us were just pale illustrations of the horrific destruction and the damage caused by the Russian army. She also called for the responsibility of Russian librarians for the lack of proper information for the Russian people. The world has learned about the difficulties with the transliteration (or Romanization) of Cyrillic through her name: she uses her name \u041e\u043a\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0430 \u0411\u0440\u0443\u0439 both as Bruy and Brui.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire Ukrainian archivists who were among the first to realize the danger: destroying material means destroying past history, allowing volatile Russian politics to airbrush history, a technique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2017\/08\/long-before-photoshop-the-soviets-mastered-the-art-of-erasing-people-from-photographs-and-history-too.html\">preferred in the Soviet Union<\/a> before Photoshop was invented. At the same event in April 2022, the director of the Central State Archives of Ukraine\u00a0pointed out that documenting anti-Ukrainian activities committed by Russians, whether previously taken to Moscow or destroyed during the war, would certainly be impossible to replace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire the international librarians\u2019 community that launched an initiative on 1 March, 2022 of over 1,500 international volunteers who are collaborating online to digitize and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage. The project called\u00a0Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online, or <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sucho.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">SUCHO<\/a>, is currently\u00a0curating the full 50TB of web archives collected so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire professional organizations for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infodocket.com\/2022\/02\/27\/society-of-american-archivists-saa-and-ica-international-council-on-archives-issue-statements-of-solidarity-with-ukrainian-archives-and-archivists\/\">standing by our colleagues<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and values, spearheaded by the American Library Association through resolutions such as\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/press-releases\/2022\/07\/ala-condemns-destruction-libraries-schools-and-cultural-institutions-ukraine\">ALA Condemns Destruction of Libraries, Schools, and Cultural Institutions in Ukraine<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">. Partners of the Ukrainian Library Association, the Goethe Institute and the German Library Association, found a way to bring Ukrainian language books to German libraries in a project called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/chytomo.com\/en\/barbara-schleihagen-it-is-not-that-difficult-to-get-ukrainian-books-anymore\/\">A suitcase with books<\/a>,&#8221; calling attention to the many refugees who were forced to leave Ukraine with a small suitcase. It\u2019s highly unlikely that a book made it into that suitcase, but librarians understand the importance of reading, especially for children who continue their education remotely in Ukrainian schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6\u00a0\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6<\/p>\n<p>We admire major news outlets for putting libraries and librarian on their agenda, showing the world the significance of collections, services, and outreach in libraries and archives. The Guardian article \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2022\/dec\/04\/our-mission-is-crucial-meet-the-warrior-librarians-of-ukraine\"><em>Our mission is crucial\u2019: Meet the warrior librarians<\/em><\/a> points out the unbreakable spirit of Ukrainian librarians and provides rich content and context related to their activities. <em>The New York Times<\/em> calls this war &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/15\/arts\/design\/ukraine-war-culture-art-history.html\">the true culture war<\/a>,&#8221; and illustrates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/12\/19\/arts\/design\/ukraine-cultural-heritage-war-impacts.html\">destruction of Ukrainian culture with plenty of images<\/a>. This war has brought more poems to us, <a href=\"https:\/\/chytomo.com\/en\/we-take-a-shortcut-from-love-to-hatred-the-newest-ukrainian-war-poems\/\">many of them already translated into English<\/a> too. If only we didn\u2019t have to post war poetry.
