These are exceptional athletes \u2013 the top in their sport. And this year\u2019s 2024 Paris Olympics was no exception \u2013 with fabulous venues and nail-biting games, races and competitions, it was an exciting and entertaining two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9864\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9864\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-4-300x221.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-4-300x221.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-4.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paralympics Logo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">All of this enthusiasm bubbled over into the Paralympics \u2013 held in the same places throughout Paris with likewise talented, extraordinary competitors. As a little <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/ipc\/history\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">bit of history,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> sporting events for athletes with an impairment has existed for over one hundred years. However, it wasn\u2019t widely introduced or supported until after World War II, prompted by the large number of war veterans and civilians who had been injured during the war.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:288,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When the 1948 Olympic Games opened in London, sixteen injured servicemen and women participated in an archery competition for wheelchair athletes. Called the Stoke Mandeville Games at the time, it later became the Paralympic Games, which first took place in Rome, Italy, in 1960 featuring four hundred athletes from twenty-three countries. Since then, they have taken place every four years.\u00a0The Paralympic Winter Games have been held since 1976, and as with the Summer Games, have taken place every four years, including a Paralympics Opening Ceremony and Paralympics Closing Ceremony. The brainchild of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/eunice-kennedy-shriver\/bio\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Eunice Kennedy Shriver<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the Special Olympics have their origins in the 1950s and early 1960s, when\u00a0Shriver noticed how\u00a0unfairly people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/about\/intellectual-disabilities\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">intellectual disabilities<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(ID)\u00a0were treated. She also saw that many children with ID didn\u2019t even have a place to play and decided to do something about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9866\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9866\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-3-223x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-3-223x300.jpeg 223w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-3.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eunice Kennedy Shriver<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Acting on her vision, she hosted a summer day camp for young people with\u00a0ID in her own backyard. She wanted to highlight what these children <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">could <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">do in sports and other activities\u2014and not dwell on any limitations. She continued to build on this goal throughout the 1960s and was the main force behind President John F. Kennedy&#8217;s White House panel on people with ID. Her insight and persistence\u00a0for justice grew into the Special Olympics movement, which was\u00a0officially incorporated in 1968.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">About 1,000 athletes with ID from the U.S.\u00a0and Canada competed in the first Special Olympics International Summer Games in Chicago. A total of over 200 events were offered, including broad jump, softball throw, 25-yard swim, 100-yard swim, high jump, 50-yard dash, water polo and floor hockey. It was such a success that Shriver vowed to spearhead the Games again in 1970 and every two years thereafter in a &#8220;Biennial International Special Olympics.&#8221; Today, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/about\/mission\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mission of Special Olympics<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is to \u201cprovide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:270,&quot;335559739&quot;:270,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9867 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"250\" \/>After learning about the similarities and differences between these two competitive events, it is helpful to read more about specific aspects and their impact. For more history on the Paralympics, check out the following two books, both by Ian Brittain, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an Associate Professor in the Centre for Business in Society at Coventry Business School, as well as an internationally recognized expert in the study of disability and Paralympic sport.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3XYsqil\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Paralympic Games explained<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is an intro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">duction to the Paralympic phenomenon, exploring key aspects and issues, from the history and development of the Paralympic movement to the economic and social impact of the contemporary Games. \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3MRhWLi\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">From Stoke Mandeville to Sochi: a history of the summer and winter paralympic games<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is a guidebook of f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">acts, figures, and stories that have occurred in the development of the Games; from their roots at Stoke Mandeville hospital in the United Kingdom to the global mega-event with close links to the Olympic Games that they have become today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:288,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wonder how the media portrays Paralympic athletes and events? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4gryxTn\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Disability, the Media and the Paralympic Games<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Carolyn Jackson-Brown focuses on the coverage of the London 2012\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paralympic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Games by the UK\u2019s publicly owned but commercially funded Channel 4 network, shedding important new light on our understanding of media production and its complex interactions with sport and wider society. A similar book on the Special Olympics is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4grxVgx\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Intellectual Disability and Stigma: Stepping Out from the Margins<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">by Katrina Scior and Shirli Werner, examining how intellectual disability is affected by stigma and how this stigma has developed, providing a framework for tackling intellectual disability stigma in institutional processes, media representations and other, less overt, settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9869 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/books-we-read\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2024\/09\/Image-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For more history on the Special Olympics, try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4de2tj5\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">A new kind of joy: the story of the Special Olympics<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">by James Haskins, who was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">born in segregated Demopolis, Alabama and later became <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a Harlem public school s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pecial education teacher.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> This inspiring book tells the story of the many people who have made the Special Olympics a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">success, including tales and examples of those who have competed. Another real-life success story is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4daWbk3\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cindy Bentley: spirit of a champion<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Bob Kann and Caroline Hoffman, which chronicles <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the life of Cindy Bentley,\u00a0who was born with an intellectual disability as the result of fetal alcohol syndrome. But with the encouragement of a teacher, she realized she had a deep passion for sports\u2014and the discipline to train and compete. So, she began participating in the Special Olympics, earning medals in tennis, track and field, and even snowshoeing.
