The Office of CARES has partnered with the City of Newark and Newark’s Youth One Stop Career Center, which oversees the Newark Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). SYEP aims to provide Newark youth with paid work experiences, career exploration, and training to enhance their future employment prospects and financial stability, while also contributing to community wealth building. The program emphasizes career readiness, financial literacy, and offers mentoring and coaching to support participants personal and professional growth.

In our first year of collaboration with SYEP, we are proud to highlight the dedication and focus of our interns, who have shown great motivation and a strong desire to grow in various areas of their lives. It is with great pleasure that we recognize their interests and contributions. We look forward to continued collaboration with the City of Newark and expanding opportunities for local youth.

Hi, my name is Amir Geofroy. I am 18 years old and a 12th-grade student at West Side High School in Newark, NJ. My career goal is to work in either law enforcement or as a mechanic. During my time with the Psychology Department, I have gained valuable experience particularly in understanding the preparation, responsibilities, and reading involved in pursuing a professional career. To me, community engagement means people coming together and collaborating to create positive change. One change I hope to see in my community is more justice being served, along with cleaner and safer neighborhoods.
