Dr. Steven Libutti MD, FACS

As Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) and Center Director since 2017, Steven K. Libutti, MD, FACS has overall authority and responsibility for the planning, development, and evaluation of the entire research enterprise of CINJ, and institutional support for this authority is described in Essential CharacteristicsAuthority of the Center Director. He received his AB Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed residency training in surgery at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, where he was selected Administrative Chief Resident. Following residency training, Libutti completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where he was asked to join the senior staff in 1996. His NCI laboratory focused on tumor angiogenesis and tumor microenvironment. During his NCI tenure, he established a basic and translational research program and served as PI on a variety of phase I and II trials resulting from his work. In 2006, he received tenure from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and was named Head of the Tumor Angiogenesis Section within the Surgery Branch of the NCI. In 2009, Libutti was recruited to Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was appointed inaugural Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and Associate Director of Clinical Services at the Albert Einstein Cancer Center.

Libutti has been funded by both the intramural and extramural components of the NCI for more than 25 years. He is currently an MPI of two R01s from NCI, a U01 REACH Award from NIH and an award from the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation. He currently serves as Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of the Springer-Nature journal Cancer Gene Therapy. He has served as study Chairman for national cooperative group multi-center trials. Nationally, Libutti has a proven record as a leader in academic surgery and surgical oncology. He is a member of the American Surgical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served on the ACS Commission on Cancer. He was elected to the Association of American Physicians, is a past President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology. He is currently a member of the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors.
