As Deputy Director since 2016, Eileen White, PhD assists the Center Director in overseeing all CCSG-related activities of the Cancer Center and stands in his stead in his absence. White has held leadership roles at CINJ since 2005. She received her PhD from SUNY Stony Brook and was a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow with Bruce Stillman and Staff Investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. White is known for her work establishing that a DNA tumor virus oncogene functions by inhibiting programmed cell death by apoptosis and is a homologue of the human BCL‑2 oncogene. She is also known for establishing that tumor cells induce intracellular nutrient scavenging by autophagy, which promotes their metabolism, growth, survival, and malignancy. In addition to being elected to the National Academy of Sciences, White is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology. She served on the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors and Board of Scientific Advisors. In her scientific career spanning more than 30 years, White has served as a PI on many NIH grants, Pharma contracts, and as an HHMI Investigator.
