All rotations follow either a 1:1 or 2:1 attending\/resident model.\u00a0 Rotations occur at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital\u00a0in New Brunswick, University Hospital in Newark, Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston or the East Orange Veteran\u2019s Affairs Hospital.\u00a0 Each site has a different clinical emphasis and patient population resulting in wide variety of experiences for our residents. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_15\">Over the course of clinical years, residents rotate through many disease sites.\u00a0 The curriculum comprises breast, genitourinary\/gynecological, thoracic, gastrointestinal, central nervous system, head and neck, pediatric\/lymphoma and sarcoma\/cutaneous rotations.\u00a0 Residents are given the opportunity to complete more than one rotation block in sites of particular interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"color_15\">Residents evenly split weekly home call.\u00a0 Duties of the on-call resident include handling in-patient consults specific to radiation treatment, as well as night-time patient questions.\u00a0 Residents always have the support of an on-call attending.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Academic Excellence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We have a strong track record of first attempt passing of the written and oral qualifying examination.\u00a0 We believe this is due to the rigorous clinical experience that trainees are exposed to during residency. \u00a0 The training program begins after the completion of a preliminary or transitional PGY I year and consists of four years total.\u00a0 Residents will complete a minimum of 36 months of clinical rotation, which is broken into two-month blocks.\u00a0 A minimum of 6 months of research elective is also guaranteed, with ability to apply and escalate this to a full 12 months of research elective.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Mission<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2009\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/cinj-radiation-oncology\/people\/nicholas-denunzio-md-phd\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2009 \" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/cinj-radiation-oncology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/567\/2023\/03\/Gray-background-for-Headshot-frame-7-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicholas DeNunzio, M.D.<br \/>Assistant Professor<br \/>Associate Program Director Medical Residency Program nd883@cinj.rutgers.edu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Our primary goal at Rutgers is to train exceptional clinicians. This is our entire team&#8217;s top priority. Residents graduating from our program should have the experience and confidence to practice in any setting, whether as an academic Sub-Specialist or a general community Radiation Oncologist.<\/li>\n<li>Our secondary goal is to nurture academic inquiry and resident research, with equal emphasis on all areas of investigation including bench research, clinical trials, translational research, health care policy and economics.<\/li>\n<li>Our final goal is to train tomorrow\u2019s leaders. Given our extensive mentoring program and access to current leaders in the field, we hope to inspire the next generation of Radiation Oncologists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Didactics<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"\" data-mesh-id=\"comp-kf4y4bz31inlineContent\" data-testid=\"inline-content\">\n<div data-mesh-id=\"comp-kf4y4bz31inlineContent-gridContainer\" data-testid=\"mesh-container-content\">\n<div id=\"comp-kf4y4bz32\" class=\"BaOVQ8 tz5f0K comp-kf4y4bz32 wixui-text\" data-testid=\"richTextElement\">\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_15\">Formal didactics in our training program is fairly unique, with Friday\u2019s being solely dedicated to protected educational activities.\u00a0 This includes various rotating events such as morning report, where residents discuss clinical management of patients, journal club or attending led clinical didactics.\u00a0 Every Friday also includes formal physics and radiation biology instruction, lead by nationally renowned scientists.\u00a0 Finally, every Friday includes the much loved, resident-led planning rounds \u2013 an event where residents teach each other, and the entire department, about the clinical nuances they have learned from each week\u2019s new cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Research Opportunities<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_15\">Research activities are divided among the Divisions of Clinical Radiation, Medical Physics and Radiation Cancer Biology.\u00a0 All faculty are active in academic pursuits which include trial creation and enrollment, grant writing and peer review.\u00a0 Resident opportunities for clinical, bench and translational research exist, and all such endeavors are supported equally.\u00a0 We encourage applicants with advanced degrees such as PhD, MS or MBA to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"color_15\">Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey&#8217;s physician-scientists engage in translational research, transforming their laboratory discoveries into clinical practice, outsmarting cancer with science.\u00a0 Our center is a matrix style, basic, clinical and population research center as well as a consortium cancer center with Rutgers University and Princeton University leveraging the science of the state&#8217;s cancer researchers through collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_15\">Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey is sharply focused on fulfilling the cancer research needs of the most densely populated and industry rich state in the nation.\u00a0 Our programs and core facilities enhance and support the cancer research of more than 230 members at Rutgers University, Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Program Structure and Curriculum Clinical rotations are organized by disease site, which allows residents to learn each site in depth with the guidance of a sub-specialist.
