Tableau is a powerful business intelligence and data visualization tool. It has an intuitive user interface and can be leveraged to turn data into informative insights to improve the way you make decisions in your business process.

Our Business Intelligence Developers are readily available to collaborate with your team to increase engagement with your data and improve the way your insights are communicated with key stakeholders. You can reach out to us for a consultation or if you’re ready to a file a Data Service Request (DSR), we look forward to working together.

Information on DSRs is available here.

Tableau Desktop

Tableau desktop translates data into optimized visual images to see patterns, identify trends, and quickly discover visual insights. Users can shift between views with drag-and-drop technology and drill down to see additional details. This software is used by advanced users to create and publish data visualization and dashboards and perform advanced data analysis.

You can connect to live data, data warehouses, spreadsheets, or blend different data sources together.

  • Tableau Desktop requires end-users to purchase a license directly from Tableau, per user prior to use.

Tableau Server

For many of our users, they only need to view and interact with Tableau Dashboards and Workbooks that were created by other publishers using Tableau Desktop. This is where Tableau Servers fits in with their business process. Our users will only need a web-browser and have access to the Tableau Server Group where the content of interest resides.

The Tableau Server can be accessed via any online browser whether you are on your laptop or on your phone. Any dashboards published on the server can be embedded into websites and enterprise portals to share out with your stakeholders.

Our team supports Tableau Servers in the development/test/ and production environment. We work with various University teams to host their organizations Tableau content on the Enterprise Tableau Server. Please reach out us to leverage the way you tell your data story.

  • Tableau server is used to share Tableau dashboards to others across the enterprise
  • There is no end user cost
  • Enterprise license managed by OIT-Enterprise Application Services

Answer unexpected questions as they happen, filter data, or drill down to find your answers.

Tableau Viewer

Tableau Viewer is a role based license with Tableau server. Spend more time interacting with the data and acting on what the data is telling you, rather than creating dashboards.

  • Used to view visualizations built in the Tableau Server
  • Access content on various devices

How to Purchase Tableau Desktop at RU

Once you’re ready to purchase a desktop license, reach out to your business manager to get a quote for purchasing a license. Your business manager or yourself can get a quote from Brandon Cozzolino – Inside Enterprise Sales, [bcozzolino@salesforce.com]. He is the university representative for our Tableau licensing.

Currently, Rutgers gets an annual subscription license for $630 (a discounted rate from $840). Once your business manager or you have a quote for purchase, you can enter your purchase in the RU marketplace.  Please note, you will be responsible for renewing annually.

A friendly, reminder each department is different and your department may already have steps in place to purchase such as filing a work order. Additionally, before getting a quote for a new license, please check if your department already has licenses available.
