This type of support:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is a primary driver of the U.S. economy<\/li>\n<li>Enhances the nation&#8217;s security<\/li>\n<li>Advances knowledge to sustain global leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With an annual budget of $7.8 billion (FY 2018), we are the funding source for approximately 27 percent of the total federal budget for basic research conducted at U.S. colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-451\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/eerc-stem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/12\/Michigan-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"University of Michigan Logo\" width=\"103\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/eerc-stem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/12\/Michigan-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/eerc-stem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/12\/Michigan-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/eerc-stem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/12\/Michigan.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_3vFF3xH4Yd\" dir=\"ltr\">The core quantitative analysis will be conducted using the rich datasets at <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.isr.umich.edu\/\"><strong>The Institute\u00a0for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS)<\/strong><\/a><strong>, University of Michigan<\/strong>, contributing to their development. These datasets provide detailed information about science and engineering students from university administrative records that are linked to employment and other survey data (LEHD, Census). It includes the enhanced STAR microdata for multiple Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) universities. These data will allow for a broad and in-depth examination of students\u2019 educational and career trajectories, particularly among students employed on funded research projects. Analysis of other data sets (B&amp;B\/BPS from NCES; SESTAT) will provide initial pathways analysis and inform development of the IRIS data.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-774 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/eerc-stem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/10\/UCSD-e1572360528475.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"71\" \/>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yankelovichcenter.ucsd.edu\/\">Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research,<\/a>\u00a0University of California San Diego<\/strong> is working as a collaborator on the university and firm case studies. They are conducting surveys and interviews with students on their decision making about majors and careers, as well as interviews with faculty, staff and advisors. They are also conducting interviews with employers in the local labor market about hiring practices and pathways in science and engineering careers.
