Clearly, the answer is 42.
Just kidding. It’s a one year program.
-
We have three potential fellowship spots each year, one for each clinical site.
-
We have three possible clinical sites with affiliated EM residency programs:
- Community Medical Center (CMC)
- Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBI)
- Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH)
Each fellow will work clinically at one of the above sites.
While simulation education will happen at and across all three sites, fellows only work clinically at one site and will not be expected to work clinical shifts outside of their “home” site.
-
During the application and interview process, you will have the opportunity to review our three clinical sites. You will be asked to rank the clinical sites based on your clinical environment preference.
While your preference for clinical site will be taken into account, the ultimate decision for clinical placement will come down to discussions between simulation fellowship leadership and the respective department chairs.

No, we do not use the Match.
Simulation fellowships are not currently considered for ACGME approval because there are currently no set standards or criteria for such a program to meet for accreditation. As such, our fellowship program does not use the Match in our application process.
While our program is not ACGME-approved, we still adhere to the ACGME Emergency Medicine guidelines for work standards.
-
While our program is not ACGME-approved – there is no accreditation process for EM simulation fellowships at this time – we still adhere to the ACGME Emergency Medicine guidelines for work standards.
Dedicated clinical shift time will be 16-20 hours per week on average.
There will be no more than 60 hours of clinical work per week.On non-clinical days, fellows will be expected to be involved in simulation planning, research, and/or operations. There are approximately 20-24 hours per week of educational theory review / application, planning, design, prep / pre-briefing, facilitation, debriefing, research, and administrative time, including required simulation sessions. In addition, at least 5-10 hours per week will be dedicated to active simulation activities including planning and implementing simulation scenarios, organizing simulation lab and skills lab sessions, and attending fellowship didactic sessions.
Faculty will be present and supervising either directly or indirectly during these simulation activities. Any additional time would be administrative or educational / research to bring them to one full-time-equivalent (FTE 1.0 = 40 hour work week).
-
Fellows will be employees of the Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health System (RWJBH).
Salary and benefits will be provided by the Emergency & Hospitalist Medicine service line.
The salary is $138,000/year, plus benefits.
-
No, not at this time.
-
Each fellow will be provided a discretional fund account up to $4,000.00 to use for CME and work-related reimbursements. Prior approval should be obtained for reimbursements.
-
Our fellows will be prepared in accordance with the Essential Elements for an SAEM-Approved Fellowship in Simulation and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) curriculum.
Upon completion of our program and review by SAEM, fellows “will be determined to be SAEM-approved fellows. This means that the fellow has successfully completed a high-quality fellowship as determined by SAEM. A certificate will be mailed to fellows who have passed the program.”
https://www.saem.org/about-saem/Services/fellowship-approval-programFellows may also be certified to sit for the CHSE exam to achieve the CHSE certification.
CHSE certification is a credential awarded by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) to individuals who demonstrate proficiency in performing healthcare simulations as educators within a medical setting; signifying expertise in utilizing simulation technology to train healthcare professionals.
