{"id":2,"date":"2017-12-06T13:06:04","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T13:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/department-of-example\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2026-02-18T15:37:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T15:37:19","slug":"americorps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/food-waste\/americorps\/","title":{"rendered":"NJ School Food Waste Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is AmeriCorps?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QgdRkzLKlPM?start=27&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Rutgers\u2019 \u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/njaes.rutgers.edu\/fchs\/\">Department of Family and Community Health Sciences<\/a>\u202fis\u202fcurrently looking to\u202fhire AmeriCorps Members to\u202fserve as the new Food Waste Corps in schools full-time to implement climate change education and programming for the 2025-27 school year.<\/p>\n<p>Activities performed by the AmeriCorps members will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching lessons on the food system and the environment to\u202ffifth grade classes<\/li>\n<li>Training school food service personnel in strategies to reduce food waste in cafeterias<\/li>\n<li>Conducting food waste assessments in school cafeterias to measure how much food is wasted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applicants need not have a background in any specific topic area. They need only be passionate about youth, food security, and\/or environmental education,\u202fbe reliable and responsible, and\u202fhave reliable transportation to get to the schools where they will be teaching.\u202fThey will be trained to implement all required activities, including teaching lessons, performing food waste audits, and training staff by the faculty and staff overseeing this program.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits for AmeriCorps Members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Living allowance<\/li>\n<li>Education Award upon successful completion of the program (can be used to pay tuition or student loans)<\/li>\n<li>Ability to put student loans into forbearance while serving with AmeriCorps (with no interest accrual)<\/li>\n<li>Professional, networking, and leadership development opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Experience teaching in public schools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>INTERESTED IN APPLYING?<\/strong> Complete an application <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.rutgers.edu\/postings\/224704\">https:\/\/jobs.rutgers.edu\/postings\/224704<\/a> or fill out <a href=\"https:\/\/rutgers.ca1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_cJjaPwn91bZlXV4\">this form<\/a> and someone from the food waste team will contact you!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Background on NJ School Food Waste Program<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/food-waste\/\">Rutgers Food Waste Team<\/a> has been successfully partnering with schools since 2018 to implement strategies that reduce the amount of food waste generated by cafeterias. The team has also piloted curricula in schools across New Jersey that teach students the importance of reducing food waste.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey\u202fbecame the first state in the nation\u202fto<a href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/governor\/news\/news\/562020\/approved\/20200603b.shtml\">\u00a0mandate climate change education<\/a>\u202ffor K-12 public schools and will implement that mandate this year. In response, Rutgers Food Waste Team has developed curricula for fifth grade students that address food waste and its effects on the environment.
