Highlight Conferences\/Workshops I Have Organized<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n DIMACS Special Focus Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n DIMACS special focus programs are multi-year, multi-workshop programs consisting of a series of workshops and working group meetings and tutorials. I was the main organizer of the following special foci:<\/p>\n\n
\nThis jump-started an entire subdiscipline and led to the first-ever book on the subject of maritime cyber security.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nI organized workshops around five research clusters, each involving focused workshops: Sustainable Human Environments, Global Change, Data-aware Energy Use, Natural Disasters, Management of Natural Resources. A sixth cluster was Education for the Planet Earth of Tomorrow. In all, the project ran 25 workshops at a wide variety of locations. The series was motivated by a year-long international effort initiative by 13 North American Mathematical sciences Research Institutes, including DIMACS. This 25-workshop series led to my book with Hans Kaper on Mathematics of Planet Earth (2019) and to a 2022 book on Mathematics for Action: Supporting Science-based Decision-making.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nNSF asked me to organize this \u201csummit\u201d of leaders of major US and Chinese computer science departments and schools as well as the Director and Assistant Director of NSF. This developed into a sequence of three such summits with workshops (and visits to universities) in China and the U.S. It identified research topics ripe for collaboration.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nTogether with Alexis Tsoukias, I helped create this ongoing international conference in 2009. I chaired the second one, at DIMACS in 2011, and worked on three others.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nThis annual symposium is co-organized by the Coast Guard and academia. I co-chaired the second MRS in 2011 at Rutgers and have served on the steering committee and as \u201csenior mentor\u201d for every one since then.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nAs co-chair of this initiative, I organized a series of 6 workshops.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nA series of seven Institutes and Workshops for U.S. and African students and faculty, on mathematical biology topics ranging from modeling of infectious diseases of Africa to conservation biology to landscape ecology to economic ecology, and held in South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nI organized a series of eight workshops on topics ranging from the supply chain for food to distribution of the COVID vaccines, leading a partnership with 11 other DHS university centers of excellence.<\/em> <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nA series of seven Conferences\/Institutes under the auspices of RUTCOR.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nWith Alexis Tsoukias, I have co-organized eight workshops held at University of Paris-Dauphine (two virtual), with more planned. Topics have ranged from computer science and decision theory to smart cities to citizen science to socially responsible algorithms.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\nA series of symposia sponsored by the Institute of Gas Technology and leading to four edited books on this topic.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
