The Faculty Collaborative explores overlapping research interests and strategizes ways to build points of commonality across our various regional specializations and humanities-focused disciplinary approaches to the study of East, South, and Southeast Asia as well as Asia in Europe and the Americas.

The Collaborative meets two sets of continuing core challenges:

The first is the intellectual challenge of addressing the scope of area studies, of critically rethinking the status of “Asia” as a world region, and of redefining the methodological and theoretical frameworks that tie various faculty members’ interventions together.

The second is in working out the institutional framework for our interdisciplinary approaches and finding a space in which we can convene regularly and coordinate lectures and activities, plan curricular directions, and organize seminars and speakers.  The Collaborative goal entails working out the pragmatics associated with organizing and launching a more permanent coordinated program in trans-regional and global Asian studies.
