Boston Declaration
April 24 - April 25

The Boston Declaration was a global call to action that united the neurosurgical community in a shared commitment to advancing access to safe, timely, and affordable neurosurgical care worldwide. Born from the momentum of the 2015 Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and the subsequent World Health Assembly resolution, this initiative marked a decade of progress while recognizing the urgent need for continued collaboration to close the global neurosurgical care gap.
On April 24, 2025, global stakeholders convened at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston to present pledges addressing identified needs in training, infrastructure, and systems strengthening. These commitments will be monitored and re-evaluated over 1-, 3-, and 5-year milestones.
Rutgers Global Neurosurgery had a strong presence at this historic event and actively participated by presenting two pledges focused on supporting neurosurgical researchers from low and middle-income countries, as well as improving medical student access to global neurosurgery initiatives via the Osler Club. The pledges were read by Dr. Anil Nanda, Director of Global Neurosurgery at Rutgers, on behalf of the program.
This gathering reaffirmed a collective responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing life-saving neurosurgical care.
