A significant portion of these populations either does not speak English, or speaks it only to a limited degree. As a result, the need for interlinguistic and intercultural mediators who can guarantee access to public services is increasing, with a forecast per the <strong>US Bureau of Labor Statistics of a 20% increase for translators and interpreters from 2021 to 2031.<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Language Center of the School of Arts and Sciences has recently launched <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/languages.elearning.rutgers.edu\/\">The Language Bank<\/a>, a free service whose mission<\/strong> is to provide high-quality translation and interpreting services to local non-profits, social services organizations, and outreach initiatives.\u202fThe Language Bank is open to all languages and is currently recruiting volunteers who can serve as interlinguistic and intercultural mediators.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the<strong> United Nations has declared 2022-23 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/dpad\/publication\/un-desa-policy-brief-no-151-why-indigenous-languages-matter-the-international-decade-on-indigenous-languages-2022-2032\/\">International Decade on Indigenous Languages<\/a>, and 2019 was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.iyil2019.org\/\">International Year of Indigenous Languages<\/a><\/strong> and also the theme of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/international-translation-day\">2019 International Translation Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With this framework in mind, our <b>vision <\/b>is the<span class=\"TextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">\u00a0<strong>establishment of stable mediator networks within and between communities constituted around languages other than English, thereby improving their access (particularly in the legal and medical realms) as well as linguistic and human resources for their advocates. <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">hese two goals are specifically achieved t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">hrough targeted workshops and designing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">appropriate materials<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">; that is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">, we <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">aim at<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">equipping<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> individuals <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">in<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">community with the necessary knowledge and skills to act as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> volunteer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">\u00a0intercultural and interlinguistic mediators for their communities, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">as well as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> pursue the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> professionaliz<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">ation of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\"> their skills<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188184761 BCX9\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW188184761 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This specific project aims to <strong>r<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>aise awareness on the lack of resources and appropriate training in translation, interpreting, and intercultural mediation for under-resourced languages<\/strong> through a two-phase program:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Phase 1<\/strong> consists of an outreach campaign to identify communities and individuals who might be interested in our offer, as well as possible trainers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Phase 2<\/strong> consists of organizing a one-day workshop geared toward these communities, though the workshop will also be open to any other volunteers of The Language Bank and the Rutgers community at large, thus encouraging an inclusive university culture as well as promoting diversity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page-header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<h2><strong>We acknowledge that the land on which we stand is the ancestral territory of the Lenape People.
