When reading Canto 5 of Dante Alighieri\u2019s <\/span>Inferno, <\/span><\/i>there are multiple ways the aged text can be contextualized and interpreted.\u00a0 After reading Charles Eliot Norton\u2019s translation from 1902 and also Charles Rogers\u2019 translation from 1782, there were some noticeable comparisons between the two.\u00a0 However, despite the large time gap between when they were both produced, they equally and properly displayed Dante\u2019s account of witnessing the souls actively perishing in Hell.\u00a0 In Canto 5, Dante describes his intricate account of lost souls who\u2019ve sinned from situations related to lust in the real world. From detailing the contrapasso, analyzing the judicial methods of Minos and speaking to Francesca da Rimini, I found both translators very successful in portraying the ambiance Dante meant to instill in his readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately reading both translated passages, there\u2019s a clear loss of the rhyme scheme, terza rima, that Dante formulated within the <\/span>Commedia<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 However, this is expected when translating a complex piece into an entirely new language.\u00a0 One commonality I also noticed was the consistency of Dante\u2019s \u201csweet new style\u201d beginning on Line 89.\u00a0 Both translators chose to start off their lines beginning with, \u201cLove,\u201d in order to keep the consistent style between the original and the translated texts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Norton\u2019s translation, I found that his writing often included more wordy and complex phrases that sometimes complicated the world flow and thought process while reading.\u00a0 For example, Norton states, \u201c…the carnal sinners who subject the reason to the appetite.\u201d Comparatively, Rogers states, \u201cTheir reason for their passion being subdued…\u201d (Line 34).\u00a0 Another instance of Norton\u2019s more complicated language includes, \u201cAnd as the cranes go singing their lays, making in air a long line of themselves, so I saw come, uttering wails, shades borne along by the aforesaid strife.\u201d\u00a0 Rogers simply writes, \u201cLike to the Cranes, who, like flying in long trains, the air disturb with their complaining notes, these Spirits uttered their moaning griefs\u201d (Line 41). Rogers\u2019 lines are easily interpretable and does not hinder the flow of reading for an average, contemporary reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, Norton\u2019s word choices appeared to be more sophisticated throughout the text, but held more emotion and impression.\u00a0 For example, he chooses to use \u201cinfernal hurricane\u201d rather than the simple \u201cinfernal storm\u201d that Rogers uses (Line 27). Looking at the original text, Dante says, \u201cLa bufera infernal\u2026,\u201d which directly translates to \u201cthe infernal storm.\u201d\u00a0 In English, we think of the word \u201churricane\u201d as much more catastrophic than the word \u201cstorm.\u201d This may have been an intention related to appeasing to English, cultural connotation. There\u2019s also another similar instance where Norton says, \u201cBut tell me…by what and how did love concede to thee to know thy <\/span>dubious<\/span><\/i> desires?\u201d\u00a0 Rogers instead uses, \u201cBut tell me, when your sighs and <\/span>soft<\/span><\/i> desires were yet uncertain of due return…\u201d (Line 104).\u00a0 There is a distinction between \u201cdubious\u201d and \u201csoft\u201d in this sentence, when Dante originally used \u201c…i dubbiosi disiri.\u201d The Italian word \u201cdubbiosi\u201d can be translated in a few ways in English.\u00a0 Although directly translated as \u201cdoubtful,\u201d it can be rendered to manipulate different perceptions of the reader. Again, the word choice of the translators ultimately comes down to the cultural impact it makes on the readers of the translated text.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After reading both copies from different translators, I was more able to connect with Charles Rogers\u2019 text from 1782.\u00a0 I initially assumed Norton\u2019s piece from 1902 would be more straightforward because the time it was translated was much later than the other.\u00a0 As a contemporary reader, Rogers\u2019 text was much more approachable and easier to grasp without having to read lines a few times in order to understand.\u00a0 However, they both kept the essence of Dante\u2019s poetry and maintained thoughtful considerations when translating the old Italian text to English.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
