He describes briefly the man\u2019s corpse and the eeriness and stillness of the night around him. Not surprisingly, the soldier\u2019s death sparks a sudden love for life in Ungaretti. Stylistically, it is written in such a way that specific and meaningful words, like \u201cmassacarto\u201d or \u201cdigrignata,\u201d stand out. Ungaretti uses metaphors and imagery well here, especially in portraying the corpse as less than human, almost animal-like. I also modified the word choice here and there because, in order to preserve what Ungaretti meant, I had to abandon some of the original Italian. For instance, whereas \u201cbuttato vicino,\u201d translates directly to \u201cthrown nearby,\u201d Ungaretti instead intended this line to portray the soldier\u2019s positioning over the dead comrade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-550 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/italian-translation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/277\/2019\/10\/Unknown-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Soldati<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Si sta come<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">D\u2019autunno<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sugli alberi\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">le foglie.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Commentary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his poem, \u201cSoldati\u201d Ungaretti likens soldiers to the death and decay of leaves during the fall season. Life on \u00a0the battlefield is fleeting, and many of Ungaretti\u2019s comrades are being shed. Like leaves, the soldiers fall. Stylistically, the poem is written in anticipation of the last line, which also serves as the most relevant feature of the poem. When Ungaretti draws the final metaphor of the soldiers being akin to leaves, the references to autumn and the trees become distinctly relevant. Impressively, in the short four-lined poem, he is able to employ three separate metaphors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Literal Translation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Soldiers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of autumn<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On trees<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The leaves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Communicative Translation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Soldiers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Autumnal\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the trees,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explanation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a translator, I only modified the literal translation slightly in order to make the overall meaning a little more clear. By changing \u201cof autumn\u201d to \u201cautumnal\u201d Ungaretti\u2019s interpretation of the soldiers as being homogeneous to the decay of the fall season is better understood.
