{"id":724,"date":"2019-11-20T02:37:57","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T02:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/italian-translation\/?p=724"},"modified":"2019-11-20T02:37:57","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T02:37:57","slug":"comment-on-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/italian-translation\/comment-on-blog\/","title":{"rendered":"Comment on Blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anita\u2019s blog on \u201cTranslation as a Practice \u201c<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>by Anita<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Raja<\/p>\n<p>Anita challenges Raja\u2019s concept<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of the \u201cinequality\u201d of the translator to the author.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She gives a very entertaining analogy: that of the relationship between a pilot and a co-pilot who have to navigate over a treacherous high mountain peak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both of their skills are needed for the safety of the plane. I agree that both writing and translating are difficult and highly skilled tasks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the whole idea of discussing equality between writer and translator is spurious.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is comparing apples with oranges. There are first rate writers as well as first rate translators<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But writer and translator don\u2019t<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>exchange roles. The creative credit goes to the writer, and in that sense the translator by default is completely dependent on the writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If I may add my own analogy, the relationship between a composer and a musician, or an actor and a playwright maybe more apt. . <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A musician depends on the score, on the creative genius of the composer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>can interpret the music with great skill for his audience but he still has to follow the score. Both the writer and the translator might be outstanding in their own fields, but the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>translator can\u2019t be mistaken for the writer; he has to follow the script.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, I agree that \u201dthe translator is the ultimate arbiter of the final work presented to the target audience\u201d, and the quality of his translation can either promote or diminish the critical evaluation of the writer. But what is paramount that a translator introduces the author<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to new audiences to enjoy his work.<\/p>\n<p>Ungaretti: Veglia&amp;Mattino<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bill Caswell<\/p>\n<p>Bill\u2019s analysis of Ungaretti\u2019s poem Mattino is different from the other blogs\u2019s translation of this poem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He pays close attention to the sonic quality of the words and he points out that the meaning of the words is secondary to their sound and feel. He notes that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in the original both lines contain many of the same letters and and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the same sound. So he choses to reduce the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>poem to its evocative skeleton fby two words that implies illumination and are related by the plosive \u201cb\u201d sound of \u201dbrightness\u201d and \u201cbrilliance\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no translation without some loss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bill transposes a very personal statement into an impersonal one. I think Parks would agree with Bill\u2019s choice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Ungaretti, as in Joyce, the rhythm and sonic quality are of paramount importance,.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the other hand, Anita Rija might disagree for she maintains that the translator has to be inventive, but at the same time be devotedly faithful to the original, even if the translation might result in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cunattractive language\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder what Ungaretti\u2019s reaction would be to Bill\u2019s translation.
