I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at Rutgers University – Camden and a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner. My research interests have been fueled by my clinical expertise in women’s health and my cultural roots as a third-generation nurse who was born and raised in the Philippines. I am passionate about exploring the Filipino American experience and examining sexual reproductive health and health disparities in diverse and vulnerable populations. I recently completed a study on the sexual and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy among young adult Filipino American women. I learned that cultural values like kapwa, pakikisama, and amor propio; deep-seated influence of religion; and the pressure to succeed as children of immigrant parents played a role in the communication between young adult Filipina Americans and their parents.  From this study, I had even more questions to ask Filipina American women! I am currently working on two new studies on contraceptive knowledge among Filipino American women across the lifespan and intergenerational communication between Filipino American women.

I have 18 years of experience teaching in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. I aim to foster an inclusive classroom and am purposeful in using diverse language and images that reflect my student population and our surrounding communities. I encourage and facilitate my students to have robust discussions about topics such as health disparities, social determinants of health, structural racism’s effects on our current healthcare system, ethical dilemmas particularly in women’s health, and the role of gender in our healthcare ecosystem. I enjoy incorporating innovative teaching and learning tools with my students including gaming, low and high-fidelity simulation, OSCEs, FlipGrid, and integrating my love for baking by bringing in edible elements like uterus-shaped cookies and contraceptive-inspired cupcakes.

I am also a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner and lactation consultant. I helped develop the inpatient hospitalist nurse practitioner role in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (now Penn Medicine) in Philadelphia, PA in 2003. I deeply value the care that we provide to our postpartum patients during their recovery and have continued practicing clinically in this role for the past 19 years. I was part of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Presidential Taskforce on Optimizing Postpartum Care, an expert panel of women’s health clinicians committed to improving maternal health during the puerperium. My clinical expertise also includes lactation, contraception, and sexual health. In 2018, I was inducted as a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for her outstanding contributions to advancing nurse practitioner clinical practice and education.
I currently serve as the treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. I served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH) for over eight years where I served as secretary of the Executive Board, chaired and presented at NPWH national conferences, and developed the WHNP Student Leadership program. In 2022, I was selected as an Apolitical/Robert Wood Johnson Gender Equity Learning Exchange Fellow and was elected as a Board Member of Fil-CHA (Filipino Community Health Association). Most recently, I traveled to the Philippines as one of the 2022 delegates of the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO).

In my free time, I enjoy traveling and going to Rutgers football games (#GoScarletKnights!) with my husband and three children, cooking Filipino food, baking fun cookies and cakes, reading and listening to audiobooks, dabbling in photography, and snuggling with my loyal pup, Luna.
