{"id":2056,"date":"2021-10-01T12:00:47","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/jewish-agriculture\/?page_id=2056"},"modified":"2021-10-25T19:48:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T19:48:44","slug":"north-america","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/jewish-agriculture\/a-world-of-jewish-farming\/north-america\/","title":{"rendered":"North America"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Brief Overview<\/b><\/h3>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The meaningful farming chapter of the Jewish story in North America from the 1890s until the 1950s began humbly in the 1820s in <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/jewish-agriculture\/ararat\/\">an aborted attempt to establish a Jewish homeland<\/a> on the Niagara River. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Failure of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/jewish-agriculture\/am-olam\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Am Olam<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> communes in the 1880s did not bode well for the future of Jewish farming on the continent. Things changed for the better, however, once domestic philanthropists and the American branch of Baron de Hirsch\u2019s Jewish Colonization Association mobilized for large-scale projects in the 1890s. With their help \u2013 and with everyone involved learning from past errors \u2013 by the early 1900s a new generation of colonies had appeared with much greater chances for success.
