Philosophical Psychology is a field that explores the scientific underpinnings and implications of psychology. In the lab, we aim to shed light on and critically analyze the assumptions, methodologies, results, and implications of psychological research.

Current work focuses on foundational questions for cognitive science such as the nature, organization, mechanics, and consequences of beliefs, the nature and implications of agency across domains (e.g., psychology, criminal justice, political science), the implications of the scientific image of persons, the cognitive science of religion, cognitive science and the law, as well as the origins, evolution, and implications of human intelligence. This latter topic is the subject of Julien’s upcoming book The Rational Ape: Exploring the Mysteries of Human Intelligence from the Stone Age to the Age of AI.

Work in the Philosophical Psychology Lab is inherently interdisciplinary, multi-methodological, and collaborative.
