Dr. Kristina M. Jackson is a co-author on a newly published study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence examining the day-level effects of alcohol and cannabis co-use among young adults. The findings show that these co-use days are linked to heavier drinking than alcohol-only days, and that this increase in alcohol consumption helps explain why people experience more negative outcomes and fewer positive effects. Rather than cannabis use itself driving the added risk, the study highlights alcohol quantity as a key factor, pointing to the importance of harm-reduction strategies that focus on cutting back on drinking—especially on days when both substances are used.
