{"id":377,"date":"2019-04-02T19:00:47","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T19:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lee-jussim\/?page_id=377"},"modified":"2023-02-16T02:10:03","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T02:10:03","slug":"letters-of-recommendation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lee-jussim\/letters-of-recommendation\/","title":{"rendered":"Letters of Recommendation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Instructions for Getting a Letter of Recommendation from Professor Lee Jussim<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(updated 2\/15\/23)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GENERAL PRINCIPLE: I AM HAPPY TO WRITE YOU A LETTER. \u00a0IT IS YOUR JOB TO MAKE THAT AS EASY FOR ME AS POSSIBLE. \u00a0YOU CAN DO THAT BY:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b> Carefully following the instructions below.<\/b><b> Getting me EVERYTHING listed below a minimum of one month prior to the due date of the first letter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Please send me an electronic copy of all materials via email.\u00a0<\/b><b> Please do not send me materials until you are actually applying to graduate schools. \u00a0In other words, <\/b><b>I do not need your materials in 2023, if you are not planning to apply till 2024.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>I MUST HAVE YOUR REQUEST FOR A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION NO LATER THAN ONE MONTH PRIOR TO THE DATE THAT THE FIRST LETTER MUST BE SENT.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Things to get me and\/or remember when I write you a letter of recc:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> BE sure to state <\/span><b>EXACTLY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> what type of program you are applying to. DO NOT ASSUME that I know what your interests and plans are. Clinical psychology? Social psychology? School psychology? Counseling psychology? Law school? Medical school? Please please please say so explicitly in a place where I can&#8217;t miss it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> College Transcript (unofficial ok) <\/span>&#8212; Remind me, did you take any courses with me? If so, which ones?<\/li>\n<li>GRE scores (LSATs, MCATs, or whatever is relevant)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resume (if you do not have one, make one). Your telephone and address should appear on your resume. If they do not, please be sure to include them somewhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Copy of your personal statement included with your application.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Summary of the work you did with me.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind me &#8212; which study(ies?) did you work on, what were theyabout?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Especially, describe what work you did on that\/those studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What was your position(s)?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research in psych\/indep. study for course credit?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work study<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unpaid volunteer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aresty Scholar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">List of anything and everything that you did that I might talk about in a letter (and you might be surprised what I can use to make you look good &#8212; so err on the side of giving me stuff you think is probably irrelevant)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">List all schools that will be receiving reccs. \u00a0List them in DUE DATE order.\u00a0 <\/span>(e.g., 12\/15 first, 1\/1 next, etc.). \u00a0<b style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Explicitly state the due date.\u00a0 <\/b><\/li>\n<li>Include clear instructions\n<ul>\n<li>Do I mail a letter? Email one? Will they contact me by email?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Any weird requirements for the recc?<\/li>\n<li><b>If anything needs to be snail-mailed, please include SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPES FOR EVERY RECC that needs to be snail mailed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>If I am to send them back to you, be sure you label the envelopes so that YOU can tell which ones go to which schools. NOTE: Failure to include these risks delaying my ability to send in your letters on time.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Online submission. Most universities now permit online submission\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">of letters or recommendation. Some do not. Please state explicitly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">which are online and which, if any, are snail mail.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>WARNING I:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Please DO NOT include anything with this packet OTHER than the stuff necessary for me to write your letter. DO NOT give me reminders about our research, your grades, papers, etc. DO NOT give me long stories regarding how difficult it was for you to find me and so you left it in my mailbox instead of giving it to me. DO NOT GIVE ME ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE ITEMS DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO WRITING THIS LETTER. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BASIC PRINCIPLE<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: I am glad to write you a letter, but I do not want to spend 20 minutes poring over three pages of comments, questions, and explanations in order to find the half-page worth of stuff I need to write your letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WARNING II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: DO NOT give me anything unless you actually want me to write and mail your letters. DO NOT give me materials &#8220;just to be sure I have it&#8221; or &#8220;to give me a chance to work on your letter&#8221; or &#8220;to give me a chance to look everything over&#8221;. DO NOT give me materials with instructions NOT to mail them. If you do not want me to mail it, DON&#8217;T GIVE IT TO ME.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WARNING III<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Please provide me with ALL the information and ALL the forms necessary for writing ALL of your letters, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. DO NOT give me info for letters for 2 schools on Friday, for three schools next Thursday, and for 4 more schools next month. You eliminate any potential problems by requesting all materials from the schools 4-6 months prior to their deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CHECKLIST INSTRUCTIONS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must copy this checklist to your own file, and include\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it in the materials you provide to me. \u00a0You must either: 1) Write the word\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;yes&#8221; next to each one, if you have done it; or 2) Write the word &#8220;explanation&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">next to one, if you have not done it. \u00a0If you opt for 2, then you must also provide\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">me with a clear explanation for why that thing was not included.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CHECKLIST<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Have you gotten me everything at least 1 month in advance? <\/span>Have you included:<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clear instructions to me (indicating, but not necessarily\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">restricted to, things like addresses, program types\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">[e.g., clinical psych, medicine, law, etc.), deadlines,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">whether or not the place your applying to has its own form)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Does any school have a deadline earlier than January? \u00a0If so:\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is this highlighted somehow (boldface, all caps, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will you periodically remind me (e.g., via email) about this early deadline<\/span><\/li>\n<li>transcript<\/li>\n<li>Resume<\/li>\n<li>GRE (or other test) scores<\/li>\n<li>Personal statement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Addressed (including both my address and the receiver&#8217;s address) <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stamped envelopes for each snail mail letter?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Description of your work with me, if any.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Other supporting materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Forms completed as much as possible (<\/span><b>i.e., have you entered my name, address, phone,\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-size: 1rem\">etc. in every place such information is requested on the form?)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Your contact info? \u00a0Your email address(es);
