Ryan Walter Smith, Josep Ausensi, and Jianrong Yu Published in Isogloss

Congratulations to Ryan Walter Smith, Josep Ausensi (Universitat Rovira i Virgili), and Jianrong Yu on their recent publication in Isogloss.

The article, titled “Strong and weak resultatives with result roots in English and Spanish,” examines how different types of resultative constructions behave across the two languages. The study focuses on change-of-state roots such as break, melt, and explode, showing that English allows these roots to appear in both strong and weak resultatives, while Spanish restricts them to weak resultatives. They propose that this contrast arises from differences in the lexical semantics of roots and the prepositional inventory in each language, offering a unified explanation for the cross-linguistic pattern.
