At the 11th Annual Tu+ Conference, held April 11–12 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rutgers Linguistics was strongly represented by faculty, students, and collaborators.
Utku, Colin, and Adam McCollum represented the Turkophiles research group, led by Adam McCollum, and presented their work, “Not all round vowels are created equal: Trigger asymmetries in Kazakh rounding harmony.” The full group of authors on that project includes Timur Akishev (KIMEP University) and Rutgers members Colin Hirschberg, Merlin Balkhash, Zoe Katz, Utku Zobarlar, and Adam McCollum.
In addition to the larger collaborative work presented, graduate student Colin Hirschberg presented a poster on “Perceptual Weakness in Backness Harmony: Applying Insights from Rounding Harmony,” coauthored with Professor Adam McCollum. Another graduate student, Aidan Sharma, presented a poster titled “A Binary Analysis of dep in Kazakh: Category V or C,” coauthored with Ariela Ye.
Rutgers Linguistics graduate alum Yağmur Sağ was also featured as an invited keynote speaker, and her talk was about “Pseudo-incorporation: from event kinds to (in)definiteness.”
