{"id":2219,"date":"2021-08-01T21:50:58","date_gmt":"2021-08-01T21:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lgsa\/?p=2219"},"modified":"2022-05-24T13:41:54","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T13:41:54","slug":"rutgers-linguists-at-pape2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lgsa\/rutgers-linguists-at-pape2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Rutgers linguists at PaPE2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tajudeen Mamadou Y., Huteng Dai, Yair Haendler, and Mariapaola D\u2019Imperio recently presented a poster titled &#8221;The Role of Global and Local Pitch Levels in the Perception of Questions in Ede Chaabe&#8221; at the  2021 Phonetics and Phonology in Europe (PaPE2021).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an excerpt from the abstract :<br \/>\n<em>Low-pitched \u2018Lax prosody\u2019 [5,6] is an areal feature found along the Sudanic Belt, presenting<br \/>\nsome or all of the following intonational cues for polar questions: final L% tone or falling<br \/>\nintonation, final polar or mid tone, final lengthening, breathy termination and\/or cancellation<br \/>\nof penultimate lengthening [6, 5, 2, 1]. In particular, [1] added a raised register level (i.e.<br \/>\n\u2018expanded pitch range\u2019) to these characteristics, which would counteract the effect of the<br \/>\npresence of a final L% in questions, in line with Frequency Code predictions [4]. In Ede Chaabe<br \/>\n(Niger-Congo), however, yes\/no questions are systematically realized at a lower global<br \/>\npitch level than statements, as well as with a local final F0 fall (L%), as illustrated in Figure 1.<br \/>\nThis goes counter to Ede Yoruba with which it shares the same sub-family and which is an<br \/>\nestablished non-lax-prosody language [11]. These production findings put into question the<br \/>\npredictions of the Frequency Code, given that neither global pitch differences nor boundary<br \/>\ntone marking would go towards a higher pitch level (Register) specification in questions.
