Maria Kouneli<\/a>\u2019s collaboration with Imke Driemel<\/a> has recently been published in the Natural Language & Linguistic Theory<\/a> (NLLT) journal. Their paper \u201cC-Agree is local subject-verb agreement in Kipsigis\u201d was accepted and published on October 21st, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract:
\n<\/strong>Upwards-oriented complementizer agreement raises questions about the directionality and locality of agreement. Based on novel data from original fieldwork, we argue that what has been described as an agreeing \u2018say\u2019-based complementizer in Kipsigis (Diercks and Rao<\/span> 2019<\/span><\/a>; Diercks et al.<\/span> 2020<\/span><\/a>) is the lexical verb \u2018say,\u2019 and what looks like C-Agree is in fact agreement between this verb and its locally introduced (often covert) subject. Our analysis highlights that \u2018say\u2019-based complementizers might be of category V, not C, in more languages than previously thought (Koopman<\/span> 1984<\/span><\/a>; Major<\/span> 2021<\/span><\/a>), which means that some instances of what has been described as C-Agree may instantiate standard verbal agreement. Furthermore, we provide a semantic analysis of \u2018say\u2019-based complementation in Kipsigis along the lines of contentful eventualities (Hacquard<\/span> 2006<\/span><\/a>; Kratzer<\/span> 2013a<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n
