{"id":3852,"date":"2025-09-14T22:37:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T22:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lgsa\/?p=3852"},"modified":"2025-09-14T22:37:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T22:37:05","slug":"professor-kouneli-publishes-joint-work-in-nllt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/lgsa\/professor-kouneli-publishes-joint-work-in-nllt\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Kouneli Publishes Joint Work in NLLT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2025, Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/maria-kouneli\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maria Kouneli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published a joint paper with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/paulafenger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paula Fenger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Universit\u00e4t Leipzig) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguistics.fas.harvard.edu\/people\/jonathan-bobaljik\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jonathan Bobaljik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Harvard University) in the journal Natural Language &amp; Linguistic Theory (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/11049\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NLLT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The full paper can be accessed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11049-025-09668-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the abstract is copied below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Abstract:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this paper, we make two main claims: (i) we claim that a proposed prefix-suffix asymmetry (the absence of dominant prefixes in bi-directional dominant-recessive vowel harmony systems) is in fact a special case of a broader generalization that should be stated in hierarchical terms (domains), not linear order (prefixes), (ii) we contend moreover that the relevant domains are best defined in morphosyntactic terms (the juncture between Aspect and Tense, cf. \u201cphases\u201d) rather than in morphophonological terms (the \u201cstem\u201d of Stratal OT and other work). We offer an account under a slight modification of an existing constraint-based cyclic approach to Vowel Harmony (Kiparsky <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11049-025-09668-2#ref-CR46\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2024<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and compare this to a rule-based (feature-filling) implementation of the Cyclic Spell-Out of morphosyntactic structure.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In May 2025, Professor Maria Kouneli published a joint paper with Paula Fenger (Universit\u00e4t Leipzig) and Jonathan Bobaljik (Harvard University) in the journal Natural Language &amp;
